Profoundly disagree- there are hundreds of hockey clubs in the communities and universities with astro turfs everywhere in UK. Same with Germany. They have a better sporting culture than us

We are at best 8/9th best in the world when it comes to consistent results. winning some fluke games against 2nd string Dutch/Belgium/Aus sides in the Pro League doesnt mean jack shite

Lack of sports culture. No astro at domestics. Regional and punjabi bias.

How can you win like that?

How da FAQ do we not have astro at domestics?, ffs

As i said before, Hockey in Europe pays peanuts for most players, YET their club scene has great players who work part time as well AND win Gold medals and World cups, same with Australia. These sports are not even watched by most people in the country- they play this for a hobby and still wipe the floors with India.. who use this as a way of securing a job and some regional fame. No wonder our cupboards are bare and the money is only spent in infrastructure.

Like punjab has probs 3/4 times the players than Odisha at grassroots so there should be astroturfs in every district of the state but its not the case and coaches cannot teach modern fast hockey on grass-- how the hell are we going to compete at international level.

Can't compare aus man. I live here. Good athletes get sponsorships and get promoted to AIS. University pays for funding etc. They get to do part time courses. There are athlete based scholarship programs etc.

India don't have that sort of funding to promote athletes. Not yet anyway.

Sad deplorable state. How da FAQ is Argentina affording astros in their uni games and district level tournaments yet we can't. Disgraceful.

We don't have the sports culture, support and appropriate athelete based programs via university campuses and district tournaments.

That can be blamed on the culture. Look at Rohit, he has put on weight. Not one football player in your premier league looks so pathetic as he does.

This is Hockey, this is sport we were supposed to dominate with our skill once we added fitness. This is land of Dhyan Chand, Mohd Shahid who dazzeled opponents with their stickwork .Once India had enough Astroturfs and improved fitness they were supposed to be dynamite team.

But all we saw is players who were neither this nor that.It was horrible display from Indian team.

We actually do t have astros in domestic though which is even more pathetic.

we only have astros in big cities and stadiums with odd astros dotted around. As most of the player demographics is from the rural side, im sure there isnt the availability of astros so kids start of their hockey journey on grass.. how is this ideal.

You only dominate if you have speed. India does not.

The skill was missing.Beating opponent with dribble and stickwork was missing. They were neither strong nor had any skills, I was suprised how well players from other teams handled the stick.

There are lot of things you can do on hard surface which simulates astro. Astro is being blamed, problems are deeper.

We dint have the skill to dribble on astros.

We have tough players but they don't have the stick skills.

Well its not just astros...

We dont have coaches who first teach kids at grassroot level the modern way of fast long stroke hockey.. the focus is on dribbing and stick control so by the time they end up playing on astros later they take longer to adapt those sticks skills on a brand new surface.

I disagree, yes you need speed but if you have exception skills, you can compensate little.

You need skills too, but pushing the ball through gaps, you need speed. Lots of it.

For a population of 1.4 billion it is highly impossible for any govt to create the infrastructure you see in Europe and Australia. What we need is skillful players who grow up with their skills to transition to power game after junior level. That is doable as long as players are skillful.
