Pakistan will only come for World Cup if BCCI gives 'written guarantee' to PCB on 2025 Champions Trophy participation

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi will seek a "written guarantee" from BCCI supremo Jay Shah about Indian team's participation in 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan before committing on their national team playing its ODI World Cup games in India, later this year.

The 2023 World Cup will be played from October 5 and BCCI have zeroed in on Ahmedabad (for India game), Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata as possible venues for Babar Azam's side.

However with ACC under chairmanship of Jay Shah not confirming the proposed 'Hybrid Model' for the upcoming Asia Cup, where India played its matches in UAE and Pakistan play their games in their home country, Sethi apparently has been advised to play the hardball.

According to a reliable source, Sethi is scheduled to leave for Dubai on 8th May where he will hold meetings with ACC and International Cricket Council officials.

The source in PCB said that during his Dubai visit, Sethi is also expected to start lobbying to garner support for Pakistan's "principled stance that it will not play its World Cup matches in India unless the BCCI and ICC give written guarantees India will come to Pakistan to play in the 2025 Champions Trophy."

"Sethi has recently met with some government officials and also obtained advice from them on whether Pakistan should play in the Asia Cup if it is not held in Lahore and Dubai as proposed by the PCB under its hybrid model plan to the ACC," the source said.

He added that Sethi has got tacit approval from the government quarters to convey a strong and blunt stance to the ACC members about hosting the Asia Cup in September.

"Sethi is expected to make it very clear to the ACC members that either they accept Pakistan's hybrid proposal or the PCB will not take part in the competition this year if it is moved from Pakistan."

The PC chairman is unwilling to accept more delays on scheduling of Asia Cup.

"Apparently, Sethi has now realized that it is time for some hard decisions and is not willing to accept any more delays from the ACC on finalization of venues and schedule for the Asia Cup."

"Sethi is clear now no Asia Cup matches in Pakistan, no Pakistan team in Asia Cup," the source claimed.

PCB wants govt to raise Asia Cup issue at diplomatic level

 

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday wanted to take up India’s participation in the Asia Cup at diplomatic level believing that neighbouring country’s travelling to Pakistan would pave the way for start of the bilateral cricket relations between the two countries.

Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ehsanur Rehman Mazari met PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi during his first visit to the PCB Headquarters in Lahore Friday.

Later talking to ‘The News’, the IPC minister said the matters regarding India’s participation in the September’s Asia Cup were also discussed in the meeting. “The PCB MC’s chairman was of the opinion that initiating diplomatic efforts to come out of the stalemate and ensure India’s participation in the Asia Cup and later Pakistan’s travelling to India to participate in the October World Cup.

Sethi reiterated his position that unless and until India visit Pakistan to participate in the Asia Cup, Pakistan would not travel to India for the participation in World Cup. We have discussed initiating diplomatic efforts to end the stalemate,” the minister said.

Though, he did not elaborate as what kind of diplomatic efforts could be initiated, it is likely that Minister for Foreign Affairs Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is in Goa (India) these days for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council (SCO) meeting, could take up the matter with the Indian counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting.

The Board for Control for Cricket (BCCI) is also tight lipped on the ‘hybrid model’ presented by Sethi recently where India could play their Asia matches on a neutral venue. The minister hoped that the India cricket team would cross over the border to play in Pakistan.

“Both the countries should restart cricketing ties with the Asia Cup as the first event of the new beginning. I will take up the matter with the Foreign Office and see what we can do diplomatically,” Mazari said.

The PCB MC was also concerned about the recent decision by the Punjab government to charge security expenditures amount from the Board during national or international events involving foreign players.

The PCB wanted the ministry to play its role in discouraging such practice as providing security is the responsibility of the provincial and federal government agencies. The matters pertaining to the MC’s mandate was also discussed during the meeting. The ministry has recently extended MC stay for another 60 days following its early stint of 120 days.

“We have discussed the progress on the mandate given to the PCB MC and the progress in this respect in special context with elections and pending complaints from different districts,” Mazari said. He added that he also discussed different cricket up-gradation programs and national and international cricket activities. When Sethi was approached, he said that the meeting with the minister was excellent. “It was an excellent meeting.”

From a media report:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has received support from cricket boards of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh with regards to moving this year’s Asia Cup out of Pakistan.

According to sources, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are willing to host the Asia Cup if it’s moved out of Pakistan.

Additionally, if Pakistan decides against playing the Asia Cup, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) could also consider replacing the Men in Green in the event with United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Jay Shah, who is the president of ACC and secretary BCCI, has also assured the broadcasters that the losses suffered due to Pakistan’s absence will be compensated during a series involving India in the near future.

Pakistan will have to deal with ICC if they wanted to play in India or not. If they skip the tournament they will be denied their share of ICC money which they desperately need.

Why do BCCI care for PCB's participation...they are anyway beggars who will do nothing but eat up our resources for free. 

 

Not to mention the radicalized toxicity that these cricketers have grown up, it's better to not give any attention to their demands. Who knows what incident might happen if India tours Pakistan? Their security is a joke.

 

Simple logic, we have power and money. PCB has to bend over on our demands or they can just stay in their hell hole of a country.

Really dumb Irish board- shifted matches to England because less likely yo get washed out due to May weather- what happens? First match is a washout which means Ireland now have to go through the qualifying tournament for the WC.

 

Stupid decision makers should have played the ODIs in UAE... you cannot play cricket properly in England apart from a window of a Month in Aug

Pakistan has agreed to tour India for the World Cup

 

 

The 2023 Men's 50 over World Cup will kick off and close in Ahmedabad. The game between England and New Zealand on October 5 is likely to be the inaugural match while the final will also be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, on November 19.

According to reliable sources, India's opening match will be against Australia and in all likelihood, it will be in Chennai. The blockbuster game against Pakistan will be on October 15, which is a Sunday, like the final on November 19.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to come up with the schedule soon, most likely after the on-going Indian Premier League (IPL), after obtaining the formal approval from all concerned. As the host, the BCCI of course could have the final say on the dates and venues.

 

In further news, Cricbuzz can confirm that Pakistan has agreed to tour India for the World Cup, independent of the continued standoff and uncertainty over the Asia Cup, but it is believed to have expressed a few concerns.

Majorly, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is understood to be having reservations over playing the big game against India in Ahmedabad and that could be one of the reasons, it is being assumed, why Najam Sethi, the chairman of the PCB, visited the ICC office in Dubai over the last couple of days.

Having agreed in principle to come to India for the quadrennial championship, the PCB chief seems to be asking for a few changes to the venues of its matches as a face-saver. However, it is learnt that the PCB has agreed to play the final in Ahmedabad, should its team reach the title clash.

As per the tentative schedule drawn so far, Pakistan will play its games in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. The BCCI has provided venues in the South Zone for the most Pakistan games with Chennai, which has a record of being a peaceful host with a very sporting crowd, getting a few extra games.

Apart from Ahmedabad and the three south centres, Kolkata, Delhi, Indore, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Rajkot, Raipur and Mumbai are the designated venues with Mohali and Nagpur missing out from the list. The Wankhede in Mumbai is likely to get a semifinal. Each team will play nine league games which means most centres, if not all, will get an India game each.

In all there will be 10 teams and 48 games in the World Cup with India, England, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh having qualified for the championship, with South Africa being the latest to get a direct entry.

The last two spots will be filled through a qualifying tournament in June-July in Zimbabwe in which two former champions, West Indies and Sri Lanka, will compete along with the Netherlands, Ireland, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, UAE and host Zimbabwe.
