Exactly. Sachin ,Saurav both gave up opening for likes of sehwag, gambhir and few others.

At this juncture nobody cares what Rohit and Kohli want, they have to do what is best for the team. If it means them playing at number 3 and 4 , then they should do it.

Asking youngsters who have played less than 50 matches  to do heavy lifting is ridiculous.

Sachin gave up his opening spot for an unestablished Robin Uthappa and it failed miserably in 2007. No way they are repeating that with Rohit to accommodate an unestablished Kishan.

Saurav gave up his spot for an established and destructive Sehwag and it worked fine. Would Saurav given up his opening spot for somebody like Uthappa?

I think the Asia cup squad selection has had a lot of thought process going into it.. Kudos to the new selection committee.

Here is how I see it.

Confirmed spots:

1. Rohit

2. Gill

3. Kohli

4.

5.

6. Hardik

7. Jadeja

8.

9.

10. Shami

11. Bumrah

#4 -> First choice is Iyer. If he is match fit, then he takes the spot. No debate..

If Iyer is not match fit/ deemed not ready for the WC, then this spot goes to either SKY or Tilak... Both of them are in the Asia cup squad.

#5 -> If Rahul is fit enough to keep for 50 overs and bat, then he takes this spot.. Hence why he is in the Asia cup squad to see if he is match ready.. If he is half fit or gets a niggle, he is Out, and Samson comes into the squad and takes the spot as the first choice keeper.

#8 -> Either Thakur or Axar take this spot depending on conditions.. 5th bowler who can contribute with the bat, so we don't play with 4 tailenders. Ideally, I would have liked R Ashwin here instead of Axar given that the WC is happening in India, and Ashwin brings a new dimension of right-arm off-spin while Axar is redundant with Jadeja in the XI

#9 -> This is either Kuldeep or Siraj depending on conditions.

In addition to all of this, Kishan is a back up opener and back up keeper. Prasidh is there as a back up to Shami / Siraj / Bumrah in case one of them picks up a niggle. He will likely travel with the WC squad as a net bowler, but will not make the 15-member squad.

That's your full 18-member squad for the Asia cup (18 including Samson).`

It seems to be well-thought out IMO.

Two ways to look at it. If top three fails like in past in big matches, is there any coming back.

They are trying to ease him out.

Who is "they"? Presuming "him" is the peerless KL.

There is no such thing as never.

There was for  Sandeep Patil who averaged more than the peerless KL in tests. 36.93 vs 33.44

There was for Vinod Kambli who averaged more than the peerless KL in tests. 54.20 vs 33.44

There was a "never" for them.

Coach sahab loves him...perhaps a state bias. Any other player and he would have been shown the door long time ago like Dhawan, Saha or even Chahal.

This is a myth. Rohit Sharma was persisted with for plenty of matches before he actually came good. The hope with KL was that his talent would eventually come through but it hasn't.  Players with greater ability should be persisted with for longer.

Rohit debuted at age of 20 and it took him 5-6 years to get his groove.

KLR debuted at age of 22/23 and now he's almost 31, in a couple of years his peak time will be over and it will give negative returns.

He has been a bad investment, no point clinging on to a share which has been in loss for 80% of the time. Better to back Rohan Kunnumal instead who is a positive batter.

I agree. But KL has played in an era when there has been an extra emphasis on Tests /T20 leagues.

I feel ODIs are the best format to develop players and has been the case for us over the years.

SRT at 20 had already played 60 ODIs . KL had just played over 50.

I want KL out too. But if it's a middle order wicket keeper then it has to be Sanju Samson replacing him.

The likes of Kohli and Rohit are, unfortunately, too selfish to allow Kishan to bat in the top order.

This is your anti-Karnataka bias speaking :protest: He got all his chances under Ravi Shastri .

Now …@Ravi_Shastri is also a Kannadiga who grew up in Bombay. Kumble was the coach in 2017 who brought him back. All Karnataka connections. I am all confused…
