Kuldeep Yadav is riding a wave of confidence following a Player-of-the-Series effort at the Asia Cup. Ahead of the World Cup, the Indian team management is doing all it can to "preserve" its lone wristspinner in the squad, and not "expose" him much against Australia, by resting him for the first two ODIs.

"Kuldeep is a rhythm bowler, we all know that," India captain Rohit Sharma said. "But we thought of a lot of things and took this call. His bowling is going well, like Ajit [Agarkar] said, we had to give players a chance, especially those who played just one game at the Asia Cup and are in the World Cup squad.

"We have been looking at Kuldeep for the last one, one and a half years, this is why we don't want to expose him a lot. He is coming back for the last match. There are a lot of reasons. This is the best decision for us, to have him sit out for two games and play the third. We also have two practice matches [before the World Cup opener], so for the bowling rhythm, he will be back in it."

Kuldeep picked up nine wickets in five games, returning an average of 11.44 and economy of 3.61. All these wickets came across two games; he began with a five-for against Pakistan in India's record 228-run win and then followed that up with four wickets in India's spirited defence of a modest 213 against Sri Lanka. Kuldeep's control and variety earned plaudits from the coaches and experts alike.

Agarkar, who worked with Kuldeep at Delhi Capitals in the IPL not long ago, spoke of the virtues that make Kuldeep a vital cog in India's World Cup wheel. He reiterated how a little bit of "faith and confidence" could do wonders for a bowler's mindset.

"I spent a couple of years with him, he is a guy who has a special skillset," Agarkar said. "Every player needs to be shown faith, given a bit of confidence, which the team management has done and it is showing on the field. In various conditions and against varied opposition, he is one of the trump cards for the team. I'm happy and excited about what he is doing. Clearly, most teams coming up against him find it a challenge, and where he is at, all of us are excited at what lies ahead."

Thrown aside like trash in LOIs, and now suddenly handed the captaincy after just one series? Life's come full circle for KL Rahul, but I still can't wrap my head around him being a tough-as-nails player, especially when the going gets tough for Team India at home. The way he's been appointed captain out of the blue, it's a total circus with this Indian team, honestly!

Sasur ji may have had some sessions with him

Kuldeep is a good bowler - but he is a spinner and doing too much Kuldeep this and Kuldeep that is going to set him up. Teams are going to study him..... and be ready for him.

I won't be surprised if he is taken to the cleaners a couple of times this WC. Everything is building up to that.

It depends on whether the opposition is able to escape from Siraj and Bumrah. If they strike upfront no team is going to blindly go after spinners and in the process collapse.

SKY kep on sweeping..and was a matter of time fall on Shakib's guile..he plays well over extra cover in T20s..not sure why he didnt try that against him..with bit of footwork..he is quite predictable in ODIs..seems need to spend good time in domestic list A setup first..let him play only T20Is for now..no need to ruin him..

He is generally very predictable. He has only two impact shots - the sweep/hoick over fine leg and the inside out shot.  It still works in T20s because the format is very short.

He is already found out in ODIs where he plays the longer innings.. Travesty is he was included in the Test squad for one game

When Hardik is bowling well..we have 4 penetrative bowlers..Boom Siraj Oandya and Kuldeep…then other team has more reasons to worry..they will have to target 5th bowler more..

Recalling Ashwin for World Cup would be just like how they played Umesh Yadav for t20 series before wt20 and also inclusion of Shami in wt20 despite Chetan Sharma had said he wasn't in scheme of things for t20 team few months before wt20.

I'm not comparing Ashwin and Umesh-Shami here, being gun bowler obviously Ashwin would perform but this just exposes the hollow claims and lack of preparedness by TM and coach, also it is an another way to destroy young player like Sundar's confidence by displaying that they aren't sure about him although he has done decently.

The Indian team can never win ICC tournaments with the mindset and preparation like this, no wonder we won last ICC tournament 10 years ago and barring fluke I can't see it happening in near future also.

Ajit Agarkar said - "Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have around forever. Hardik has been there and Kuldeep too. They got fair amount of cricket in Asia Cup. Guys need mental break and come the third game, our main players will play 3rd ODIs vs Australia".

Team has 3 maaplayis who are allowed to do as they please and are also wrapped in cotton wool for no reason.

I think there is some confusion.  I believe the squad against Aus has nothing to do with the squad for the WC.  Squad for the WC would be finalised on Sept 27 (deadline).  Ashwin may be excluded from the WC squad, along with the fraud SKY (hopefully).  But SKY plays for MI (so I doubt he will be replaced)

one of the biggest positive in this bizarre selection is Chahal's exclusion. I believe that specifmen is binned permanently.

his 'best' format is t20s so don't be so sure. He is going to be kept as the next cab off the rank based on performances in county cricket and will be on standby if one or 2 others get injured.

Nope.At best they can take singles and block. It will take some extraordinary rubbish for him to be taken to cleaners.

Ashwin is selected on an experimental basis. If he has a good series vs australia he will be considered. I think they want to see where he "stands" given the flaky fitness of Washi.

Hope not. We have to move on from that guy. We have Bishnoi, Suyash to try. Even Varun has improved a lot in T20. No more Collar chewer.

Considering the proximity to the WC, Ind hv rested 4 main players.  Rohit, Kohli, Pandya and Kuldeep.    Surprising that Aus hv not rested any player.  It is a full strength squad.  They are not at all worried about any injury which could happen.  LOL.  Looks like they desperately want to whitewash us 3-0 and make a statement before the WC.

Smith, Maxwell, Cummins, Starc are all coming back, haven't played ODIs for some time.

Good observation. Even i feel selectors are doing the right thing.  This is done to narrow down the final XI for that you need to find the right guys for few  places like - No. 5 batter, best reserve batsman, replacement for Akshar, best option for an offie in 15 & backup  pacer.

Hence

1.Iyer, Tilak, SKY  would be tested before final call for No.5 MO slot. Guy performing from here to practice games will get it and also audition  to find best reserve batsmen among these .

2. Need a replacement for Akshar - Hence ASH & Sundar given chances.

3. One thought could have been the lefties in opposition teams and sh is the best against them during final stages of the tourney esp. teams like ENG , SA ,AUS. ASH has great record against Stokes  who is a real match winner.

4. There is no need to expose Kuldeep now . Let them face Kuldeep 2.0 only in WC.  History shows that whenever teams had some form of mystery /new trick  they have hidden it and unleashed in crucial tournaments.
