I have worked on mobile comm starting from AMPS->5G, such a thing can be don't only with tampered hardware. Hardware is highly regulated and checked for radiation, etc, phones are hard to tamper as the new phones have no external batteries. And you have manufacture such tampared phones illegally. These pagers had what it seemed like a AAA batteries, they are not regulated by govt as much as phones. There have been cases of iPhones catching fire in airplanes. Hence, they will not let you keep phones, batteries and power-banks in checked baggage. But, it's scary when it's time any safeguard will eventually breached. These incidents can make you lose sleep definitely. How hard can it be to tamper supply chain and let loose faulty IOT devices that are in your homes now - from Alexa, to smart refridgerators and microwaves. that are accessible via internet now. Vicks57
Pagers are produced by Gold Apollo, a Taiwan company. This Taiwan has some sort of agreement with a European company in Budapest to either use the same name for their pagers or supply to Gold Apollo. For people who know tamil, this army guy has some perspective on this.

Quote 'Civilian objects' should not be weaponized: UN chief Guterres United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that civilian objects should not be weaponized, following a series of deadly explosions in Lebanon targeting pagers used by Hezbollah. "I think it's very important that there is an effective control of civilian objects, not to weaponize civilian objects -- that should be a rule that... governments should, be able to implement," Guterres said at a briefing at UN headquarters, AFP reported. randomGuy and raki05

Do they fall under statutory war crimes? They get a free pass. But the civil society tends to operate on ethics like war-crimes. Obama got a Nobel prize but he re-started wars - Syria, Libya and drone-bombed marriage parties in Afghanistan. Nobody talks about his war-crimes. diga
bsriharsha
I have no sympathy for the members of terrorist groups who got killed/castrated or whatever. They got what they deserved. What was stopping Israel from doing the same to Hamas members though ? Instead of engaging in a long drawn out war in which the death count keeps increasing as Israel continues its genocidal practices.

Remember the pressure cooker bombs used at Boston marathon, exploding TVs have been used to assassinate political figures before It's nothing new. The new thing was how they tapped into terrorists network and ensured only they get these devices and not innocent people.

In this case they were able to set up a shell company, get intelligence on where and how they were going to buy decides only for those in the group and then insert untrackable explosives. It was a huge intelligent operation which would have taken months and months to plan.
