tapandrun
Fan-base is mix of organic and PR. When there was no SM player used legacy media, journalist to write good about them. Fans or audiences would have some of their favourite players. Take example of Sachin he was fan favourite in 90s and early 2000s but when he use to fail there were criticism, his injuries were talked about and there were skits made and broadcasted on TV and taken in good fun. There was no push back when ppl were unhappy with sachin's performance. But now no-one can seem to say anything against these players this is not organic when as soon as some1 says anything about the players they are termed as haters or attacked on to this is completely a paid PR campaign. Batter plays 1 single shots and he becomes the talk of the town and videos keeps surfacing, tweets keeps popping up which requires some knowledge of various software tools to create pics or videos those can not be organic, no one would have time to do that unless a PR company. Even Kolhi took sometime to establish his name, ppl will critique him, but now players like Sanju, gill have such strong PR that they are called star who are still to perform against a top team in a marquee event. Dravid and Sachin were top batters of their times, ppl may like one player over other but all knew sachin was 1 spot up. Do we see that kind of understanding with Kolhi and Rohit, rohit is presented as equal to kolhi which we all there is huge difference between the two. Take sanju's case he has been there his popularity only increased when RR starting taking Sanju's captaincy seriously, else he has been there he was their captain but only when RR management were serious that he is the one for next 3-4 years then only Sanju's fan-base increased this can not be coincidence. Yes there could be some genuine fans but not to this level. There were some news of some new player getting into the deals with PR companies to boast his clout and bcci sent some kind of message to him not to do that. MI has been bitten with this PR thing with rohit's case now teams would understand to keep all this in check. The thing is if PR can get some1 in the team player would try to use it same way they enrol themselves to certain management companies ..... Edited January 7 by tapandrun Link to comment

It's not because of perceived "talent" but because of big commercial interests that have anointed him as the Prince. As for his talent, I have seen Carl Hooper (obviously), but also Lawrence Rowe. Both were far more gifted and had more complete games than Flashman Gill. I would not put him in the same league as these two. It is because of both, especially percieved talent, because Gill shares the same quality of hooper: he very rarely is troubled by the bowlers, he almost always looks comfortable and makes the pitch look 2x easier than before he came in, then gets out to a stupid shot all the time, just like Hooper. Yes, Hooper was more technically correct than Gill, but that is a given for almost all batsmen who learned their skills in the 80s as kids than the kids of the T20 era. I think Gill will get a long rope and will hopelessly frustrate & polarize Indian fans precisely because of his 'pitch looked like a minefield till i came, then i made it look like a road but i only scored 28 and got out like a silly idiot' type of game- the same exact thing as Hooper's batting. rkt.india
He needs to be dropped from test though not discarded. Let him play some A tours, work on his issues, secore runs and return if his replacement also fails. Link to comment

Because if team *WILL* end up replacing Kohli and Rohit sometime next year or at least that is the main pressing need and that means 2 noobs in top 5 and that is gonna definitely take time to settle to bring the spotlight on the OG mediocres in the team: Gill and Rahul. And if Gill has a good patch of a series or two in that, then he is set for another year or two and then the team chemistry is gonna prioritize replacing jadeja/Bumrah and Gill again gets to stay. I predict this, because short of crazy internal board politics, its very very rare to see a playing XI with 3-4 debutants and teams almost always go for 'max 2 open spots' strategy to introduce new blood. Granted, you can recycle half your team even with '2 open spots per 2 series' tactic if your replacements hit the ground running like a Dravid or Ganguly, but thats often not a given and unless Jaiswal turns into the new Gavaskar or something, India wont risk more than that + replacing Jaddu in the next few years in its batting order.
