Him and Rajinder SIngh Goel were born in the wrong era. Both were prolific in domestic. But couldn't break the spin quartet. Goel took close to 700 wickets Shivalkar over 500 wickets. By the time quartet disappeared these two were old. Guys like Dilip Doshi, Shivlal Yadav, L siva started emerging.

That doesn't explain not playing even one game. Surely there'd have been some injuries etc.

MacGill played lot of games despite Warne being there.

They should have played handful of matches. But they were so many politics in those days.

it explains everything actually. My family used to speak of the crazy levels of politics in the 1930s, for instance, with people like Vizzy Maharaj. In 60s/70s, things had improved, but there was still huge zonal bias, politics based on groups (e.g., location, language, culture, religion).

Bedi was the last to join the quartet. So tussle was between  Bedi , Goel and Shivalkar.

they debuted around same time in domestics (61/62, I think). bedi got the call up, and never relinquished it thereafter

You need a bit of luck to make debut at the right time. Ofcourse you have to make use of it. Sandip patil and Kapil dev were disciplined and dropped from the Test for "irresponsible shots" .  Not for form. Azharuddin who had scored a 100 against touring ENgland side in a tour game was picked in place. He scored 3 back to back 100s. Patil's career  was summarily over. Same way Ganguly and Dravid made debut in the same match in place of Manju and some other guy. Ganguly back to back 100s. Dravid back to back 50s. Both solidified almost instantly the spot. You need that luck factor. You should be young enough to make debut right at the time transition.
