If you say so :)

I'd like to agree to disagree. I can't think of even one of the quality of the three I mentioned above. Hindi in general doesn't do comedies/romance too well. Last good comedy in Hindi was from the Amol Palekar zamana.

There is nothing to agree or disagree. There is no one measure of quality. They both are made with different sensibilities. A hit in South India remade in Hindi flops. The list I posted above I can't find such movies in South India.  MR himself didn't repeat the quality of Mouna Raagam. I hate the genre of KamalJaasan so-called romantic movies - Moonram Pirrai (Sadma), totally unrealistic overacted piece of crap. MR's first movie - a Kannada movie called Pallavi Anupallavi (Anil Kapoor's first as well). Watch it, he had so much promise.

What one like the other can dislike and vice versa. It's a matter of personal preference. So of course you can agree to disagree. And Alai Payuthey and OK Kanmani were pretty awesome as well. I agree with the Kamal Haasan bits. His romantic movies are terrible. His 90s comedies though are legendary

There are some good comedy movies...albit not very well known

1. Phans gaye re Obama is one..where a jobless NRI is abducted by different gangs to extort money thinking he is rich

2. Munnabhai MBBS is good

3. Oye Lucky Lucky Oye

4. Padosan

5. Andaz Apna Apna

6. Hera Pheri

7. Chupke Chupke (Dharmendra)

8. Angoor

9. Jane bhi do yaaro

Jaane bhi do yaaro and Angoor were Amol Palekar ka zamaana. Most Kishore Kumar comedies are gold anyways. The rest - only Andaz Apna Apna was funny (good for its time. Cringe if you watch it now). The rest are run of the mill. Munnabhai is more a feel good movie than an outright comedy. It has its moments - but doesn't qualify as a comedy on its on IMO.

Pakeezah (1972) … A classic that is probably not for everyone … A thread on it below:

I recently watched tons of Nasir Husain films … And I found Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963) to be a well executed love story!

I like Nasir Husain’s films for their relative modernity, masti, and music. This is among his films that I may visit from time to time!

Last good Comedy movie from Bolly that was genuinely funny was Pyar ka Punchnama 2...  As a  90's kid it felt relatable to my age demographic

Awara

Just watched it.

Now I am scratching my head. Does this film really resemble your own love story? Brother, did you really have to suffer so much in your life?

Does Beta qualify as a romantic film? What about the one with the botanist Dharmendra - Chupke Chupke?  What about Taal? If these count, then those are some of my favorites.

How do we even define a romantic film in the Indian movie context? Pretty much every movie other than the hardcore Nana Patekar encounter films has a front-and-center "love" angle.

These have to be the most unromantic lines uttered in this thread. Or perhaps in the history of the internet. :p:

A film if romantic if you feel it is. Period.

Silsila deserves a mention. great acting, great music and a lot of good writing/dialogues.

Couple that with the real life AB Jaya Rekha scene.

It was not so much the suffering part, but the legal angle part that relates to the "romance" aspect in real life.

DDLJ

DTPH

KNPH

KANK

K3G

KHNH

are better mentions. Mohabbatein is not even a word in Urdu is a stupid movie

Some of the most stupid movies ever! Really did a disservice to Bollywood with this plastic crap. DDLJ is such a cringe fest! I can't believe people celebrate the success of a creepy stalker in his endeavors to get the lady to submit to his unwelcome advances. Darr was a better romantic movie than this.

The less said about the rest the better.

Only the Jimmy & Priety Jhangiani part was good/decent.

Uday Khopra's story was terrible. Jugal's story was just so so, maybe coz her actress was extremely bad.

Yup,

I remember all the sister in laws & aunties used to talk about this movie so highly.

Me being a naive pre-teenager spent hard earned pocket money to watch this crap in theatre....was totally confused on how come SRK talk to a "ghost" in the broad daylight. :cantstop:

Aha, so you would be okay with SRK’s character talk to a ghost at night?
