SIVAGANGA: A 21-year-old Dalit student from Melapidavur village in Sivaganga district was attacked by caste Hindus for riding a 'Bullet' on Wednesday late evening.

The Dalit youth R Iyyasamy suffered hack injuries on both his hands. He is presently undergoing treatment at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, about 45 kms away.

According to police, late on Wednesday evening when Iyyasamy was returning home on his motorcycle, he was confronted by three caste Hindus namely, R Vinothkumar (21), A Atheeshwaran (22) and M Vallarasu (21) of the same village.

Subsequently, they attacked him with sharp weapons.

A relative of the injured college student, Muniyasami said that the caste Hindu men hacked Iyyasamy's hands saying, "only higher community youths can drive high-end bikes, Dalits should not drive such bikes." They also abused him referring to his caste.

The gang would have murdered him if Iyyasamy had not managed to flee the place and reach home, he added.

After the family members took Iyyasamy to hospital, caste Hindus ransacked the Dalit family's house.

Caste discrimination has been prevailing in the village for a long time now, Muniyasami noted, demanding police protection for the family.

Iyyasamy's father, Boominathan said the caste Hindus were not happy with his driving of a 'Bullet' bike in the locality.

 

On a previous occasion, they damaged the bike.

Police sources denied the 'Bullet' issue is the primary reason for the attack. They claimed that Iyyasamy had teased one of the suspects, Atheeshwararan. They already had a quarrel between them.

However the investigation is still on, police added.

SIPCOT police booked a case against Vinothkumar, Atheeshwaran and Vallarasu under 296 (1), 126 (2), 118 (1), 351 (3) of BNS and 3(1)(r)(s) of SC/ST Act.

They were arrested and later remanded in a prison.
Iyyasamy is a third year UG mathematics student at a college in Sivaganga..

I didn't tag you coz my post wasn't specific to your post. 

 

It's a trend I am seeing in general, one news is posted, then discussion happens on blaming each others region, mentality, attitude and everything ends with arguments which leave everyone feeling bitter against each other.

 

If the discussion/criticsm is constructive, posting such news is welcomed. But, you also know where these things end at.

NO, They have a tourism industry. If i speak to anyone who vists India, They will say either Goa or Kerala.

People just dont understand basics on how foreign currency impacts the region they live in. Just chk per capita income of Maldives.

 

Only commendable state is Tamilnadu.

Hate to say it but you are right.   TN is clashing with Kerala on Social development,  economically almost as solid as MAH.  BC manufacturing bhi theek thak hai:ranger:..  IT is fantastic too.

 

They are basically good in every statistic you can find.

 

I am happy with Delhi numbers as well  though.  Good stuff

Delhi is a Mega city. It has lot of people with money. So naturally it will flow in poorer hands lot freely in Delhi. 

 

Poverty lies in rural and semi urban areas.

 

Saying that: Poverty and extreme Poverty are two different things. Instead of going into politics I keep track on numbers. Over 20% of India was living in extreme poverty in 2013.

That was a massive number.

In the North East I had no clue Meghalaya is this level dirt poor.  Epic myth buster... Ek toh gareebi and upar se unchecked Kanglu infiltration :((

Yeah, weirdly Mizoram & Manipur which are more at cross roads have low levels of proverty.

I think Meghalaya's terrain to is a bigger issue. And that region is basically run by Garo, Khasis, Jaintia tribes.

Why has Meghalaya not been able to develop a tourism based economy? It has one of the most beautiful landscapes not just in India but in the world.

in late 90s I was in North East. it used to take around 10 days for me to reach their from Gujrat via train

I read in some news that locals are resisting the development.

Also, the population density is quite low and the terrain is very uneven. Thus even connectivity wise it poses challenge.

 

Even if we consider the rail connectivity to entire NE capitals. Shillong is perhaps going at the slowest pace. Airport wise as well, the strip in Shillong is very small and only certain category of airplanes can land.
