I saw a lower tier  WTA event in the USA a few years ago and I am surprised why Indian women are not able to have players to match the standard. Sania Mirza in this era would have done a lot better with Williams sisters and Sharapova gone.

Mens I can understand. Looking at Djokovic and Alcaraz don’t think we have that level of men’s athlete. It’s the harsh truth.

That’s because no one visits other sports section and this is a significant sporting event. This would rank pretty low on a whining list :nice:

^^^Sania Mirza was crappy player, who just got hyped due to lack of female tennis players, she never had any high ceiling. She would have done the same thing even now.

Unless Alcaraz's first serve drops below 60%, no chance for Nole.

If 70-75% like till now, this is going to be over in 1.5 hours. Last time Nole looked this much outclassed in a GS final first set was 2020 French Open against Nadal.

She had the power game. Women’s tennis is lacking that from what little I have seen. Maybe she would have sucked but women’s tennis qualify has gone down and unfortunate we don’t have a decent prospect. Sania was top 30 in a pretty competitive era.

I don't think so.She never had consistent big serve either .Her fitness was also not upto the standards. She did not have the net game like Leander Paes either.

Serena is the GOAT . So it is hard to replace a player like her.

Iga is going to be Nadal of french open. Gauff is an excellent player, Naomi is going to be back to her top game. Give it some time.

What the hell is wrong with Novak. Are we seeing the end of the champion.

He is like 37 years old so yes.

Alcarez will take advantage of weak era though

I dont think Alcaraz is not a patch on Federer nole and Nadal at their peaks.

Alcaraz reminds me of Pete Sampras.

That is doing disservice to Carlos today.

Novak was good enough to win 3/4 last year. He lost the fourth in 5th set.

But you might be right , he will take advantage of weak era just like Roger till 2009. Roger should have never ended up with 20.

A "hamaare zamaane mein" unkal-waala post:

The most beautiful Wimbledon final I ever saw? 1984. McEnroe bt Connors 6-1 6-1 6-2.

Most people will call it boring,  but I was such a rabid McEnroe fan that I just loved the dominant put-down of a scrappy guy like Jimmy Connors.

McEnroe's 1984 record (82-2) is the most dominant single-year performance by any player - male or female - in the history of open era tennis. His first loss was when he blew the French final to Lendl.

He lost only one other non-Davis Cup match the whole year. To none other than India's own Vijay Amritraj!!

Novak needs to calm down and gather himself. First set is gone.

Truth is match is not on Nole's racquet, especially against Alcaraz and Sinner these days, more so in BO5. To a lesser extent, you can add Zverev, Medvedev.

Alcaraz especially plays at a much higher level than him. Nole needs him to have mental lapses, niggles etc. to compete. Both playing close to their best, no chance for the Serb. And today he is playing well below his best (in fact whole year his decline is apparent), should also add the nugget that he had a knee operation just before this tournament.

Nole's only chance today was for Alcaraz to have a nervy start (has happened a few times with him) and have low first serve %, serve is his main weakness. But neither of that happened. Result is foregone. But Nole may still clinch a set, Alcaraz has a habit of mentally checking out for 20-30 minutes out of the blue.

Amritraj is the most underrated Indian sportsperson of all time. How many wins against ATGs!!!!!

He is the greatest 21 year old in the history of the sport. He eats 21 year old versions of Nole, Fed, Rafa, Borg, Sampras, Becker etc. for breakfast, lunch and dinner....only exception being vs Rafa on clay!!!!!

Complete game, domination despite serve being his weakness, imagine the all round quality. And a mental beast, 12-1 in 5th sets.

He needs a great rival to push him to be better, maybe Sinner is the one especially on hard courts.
