Dhoni was a great leader - led us to 3 ICC tourneys, was MOM in the WC where he helped chase the highest total ever chased in a WC final, and a great wkt keeper to boot. Winning is not easy and captaincy matters. We saw it over the last decade how difficult it is to win tourneys. It took great captaincy from Rohit to win just one, and Dhoni won 3! Once can be luck, twice maybe coincidence, but 3 titles can't be pure luck. And he nearly won the 4th one in 2014 but for that Yuvi 13 off 21 innings. Dhoni messed up here by not promoting Raina over Yuvraj.

As a combination his value is far greater than Kohli or any other pure batsman. If I'm building a new team and I can have any Indian player I can choose from, my top 3 picks would be Dhoni, Bumrah and Kapil. There's a reason why India improved in chasing once Dhoni came along. Look up our stats before Dhoni and after he booked his slot in the Indian team. A reliable lower order batsman averaging 50, a wonderful white-ball captain, and a wkt keeper to boot is a luxury not too many teams have.

Same with a bowler like Bumrah and a gun all-rounder like Kapil. You can build your team with any no. of batsmen and India has had many (SRT, Kohli, Rohit, Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhawan, Raina etc.) But these 3 players are unique and cannot be replaced easily. The flexibility they provide to the team is not something other players can. I can mix and match other players but these players are essentially 2 in one. The next two players after these would be Yuvraj and probably Pandya for the same reason. Fill up your team with as many multi-dimensional players as you can to add depth. A drop-off from Kohli to say Dhawan, or from Tendulkar to Sehwag can be managed but the drop-off is extremely steep when you go from Bumrah to the next best pacer (probably Zaheer), or from Kapil to the next best all-rounder (Pandya is the only one I can think of and Kapil is way ahead).

We played 8 world cup tournaments under dhoni captaincy n won 2 trophies.

Kohli - 0/2 world cup

Rohit - 1/3 world cup

Dhoni was mentor for 2021 t20 wc, so total 2/9

Gambhir was as clutch as they come! Played 2 WC finals and top scored in both! :hail:

Even Dhoni showed up in the WC2011 final. People may say we would've won anyways. But I'm not too sure. We were 115/3 chasing 275. One more wkt we lose the match and Yuvraj was the next one who was out for a duck against Pak in SF and SL had 2 offies and Yuvi did struggle against spin. Plus we all know how "easy" it is to score in finals when none of our batsmen have done anything in knockouts over the last decade.

If scoring in finals would've been so easy, we wouldn't have scored much more than 240 in WC2023 final, and easily chased 240  in 2019 WC SF. Fact is batting, and chasing in knockouts and especially in a Final is a big thing. Till now 275 is the highest chase in any WC. It looked easy coz Gambhir and Dhoni managed to handle the pressure. Give the same target to the current lot in a Final and watch the fun. They showed up when it mattered. That's what matters and that's what it says in the record books. Rest is all speculation and woulda coulda shoulda.

True but he does have 91(79) in the final and his knocks against SA in WT20 2007 where he and Rohit saved India in a must-win match. Same in WT20 2007 SF against Aus where he played a decent cameo.

We won 3 ICC tourneys under Dhoni - 2007 WT20, 2011 WC, and 2013 CT.

In our entire history we've 6 ICC titles and Dhoni as a captain accounts for 50% of those. That's pretty good in my book. And dragging Dhoni for 2021 is laughable and reeks of desperation

I agree with all but tbf zaheer was fantastic in 2011. He bowled brilliantly. For some reason sreesanth who was inconsistent but talented also stepped up in key icc games. Both of them.

Bit underrated imo. Stats don't do justice for zak. But yes bumrah is on a different planet altogether.

He is like goku God

Zak is more like majin vegeta/SSj 3 goku

Zaheer was sensational in 2011 WC and that Zaheer would walk into the our all-time ODI team alongside Bumrah and Kapil, with Shami on the bench. But 2011 Zaheer was still not better than peak Bumrah. Check how Zaheer was taken apart in the 2011 WC final at the end. I can't see anyone able to do that against Bumrah. Batsmen are scared of taking on Bumrah even in T20s. Don't think I've ever seen any batter do so against Zak or any other Indian bowler.

But Zaheer's opening spell in Finals of 2011 was stuff of legends.

I think he bowled 4 maidens in his first 5.

Man l love that team, so full of clutch players.

Gambhir, Yuvi, Dhoni, Raina, Zak, Harbhajan.

If winning CT was so easy I'm sure Kohli would've done that in 2017. We all saw what happened. 3 ICC tourneys, and 2 of them WCs.

Here we were waiting for more than a decade for a trophy with our supposedly best bowling attack and our ATG batsmen with the so called "King" and yet you're taking shots at someone who actually won us 3 tourneys under him

Bowlers conceded 275. Indian had to chase the highest total ever chased in a final to win.

You must be confused with 2019 where the bowlers had contained NZ to 240 and yet we all saw what "King" did :giggle:

Dhoni first ct as captain - group stage exit

Total wc (odi+t20) - 22

Out of 22 tournaments, Dhoni captain for 8 wcs

Dhoni 2/8(not great)

Rest 2/14(not bad)
