Paris Olympics 2024 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Chit chat threads we'll use for buildup, general discussion, other news related to the Games.

Event by event commentary we can use this one, will have more visibility. Hope for a mega thread, Tokyo thread was 300+ pages iirc, let us beat that and let our heroes beat the Tokyo haul. Double digits medal count will be a dream come true.

India's Olympics starts off on the 25th of July - one day ahead of the opening ceremony with the Archers shooting for seeding for their individual and team events (men's and women's). India has a full contingent of 6 archers (3 men and women each)

9.30 am local / 1 pm IST
Women’s Individual Ranking Round and Men’s Individual Ranking Round

Athletes in contention:

Men

Dhiraj Bommadevara

Tarundeep Rai

Pravin Ramesh Jadhav

Women

Bhajan Kaur

Ankita Bhakat

Deepika Kumari

Recent form:

Deepika won silver in the recent stage 1 of the archery world cup in Apr. The men's team with the same 3 also won gold beating Korea in the finals at the same stage in China.

Dhiraj Bommadevara won bronze in stage 3 in June in the individuals

The mixed team won bronze in both stage 1 and 3 this year - Dhiraj being part of both teams.

No definite hopes for a medal - although if they keep to form - could surprise us pleasantly.

Sift is probably the most inform of our shooters so I guess we can expect a medal there. Don't really know the chances of the rest, maybe Bhaker

Anyway the sport is about clutchness in the key moments rather than form, handling the pressure will be key

True, we've had folks make world records in the first round only to fall apart in the finals too often.

Olympics is about flexing a country's financial clout.

Yes to a large extent, also the sports budget and economic indicator. the only exception to this rule is long distance running and to some extent athletics which kind of doesnt need initial investment. for any other sports like archery shooting canoeing and even swimming you need proper coaching ..to some extent genetics plays a part as well.. high endurance of kenyan long distance runners..

Very good article. Poignant

which near miss hurt the most..personally for me it was the bronze medal match in athens

After a long gap of 20 years, the curse of the fourth place returned to haunt the Indian contingent when the celebrated duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi missed out on the podium at the Athens Games.

Arguably India's greatest doubles pair in tennis, Paes and Bhupathi missed out on a bronze medal after losing a marathon match to Croatia's Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic 6-7, 6-4, 14-16 to end fourth.

Shooting is the biggest hope, can't have three Olympics dud in a row!
The trials had been strict and gruesome and the best shooters have been picked.
India has representation in all categories in shooting.
Expecting atleast 2 medals this time!

Biggest prospect: Sift Kaur Samra and Manu Bhaskar.
But expect some surprises too....

How many Gold medals can we expect realistically.
Maybe 3...

Neeraj Chopra
One of the Shooter
Satwik-Chirag ( if they fire at right time)

Neeraj definitely

shooting on a very good day maybe 1. I m expecting at least 1 silver and 2 bronzes

Satwick Chirag : should go to semis. Best case silver. They have lost few close ones lately

No expectations bro. My heart can't take disappointments this time. Just hope for the best, hope to see us being world class in at least a couple of events every day of the Games.

1 would be expected IMO. 2+ would be amazing. All depends on the shooters. Have our strongest contingent this time and it looks like they have prepared well for it. All depends on the day.

Badminton IMO - Chirag and Satwik have not done great since they have won - doubtful they will win. Neeraj will probably be our best bet on gold. Not sure if he will repeat, but he should def medal IMO. Nikhat Zareen is also a good contender for gold in boxing, IMO.

Medals expected - Shooting 2-3

Badminton - 1

Athletics - 1

Boxing - 1

Don't see us winning more than these, to be honest. I would love to be proven wrong. Wrestling is in the doldrums atm and our Athletics team are not yet at world beating standard - although the standard has risen a lot in the last 10 yrs. Maybe in the next 2 olympics we should have more hopes of more winners.
