Hoping against hope about archery. Have been hoping to get a medal in archery since Limba Ram days and then Deepika ( her 4th Olympics). I guess this has been the longest wait for a medal in any known discipline for india where we have won medals regularly in non Olympics world events. After only winning medals in hockey we have now won olympic medals in tennis, badminton, wrestling, weightlifting, shooting, boxing, atheletics but havent been able to crack archery..

Even last time Atanu raised hopes. Jyothi did very well in asian games but compound is not part of Paris olympics.

Aus is the team to beat though they have been on a choking spree last decade or so (except against us), kind of like Indian cricket team.

Bel may be favorites but an aeging team.

Won't be surprised if Dutch win double gold, prime age/form without mental lapses of Aussies.

Germany recent WC champs, mentally toughest team out there, won QF, SF, F in the WC after being in 2 goals deficit each time....against Eng, Aus, Bel.

Competition is tough as usual.

Tougher than winning any cricket World Cup.

Actually men's team and Dhiraj are the best chance of a medal IMO. Deepika Kumari will reach QF max. Mentally shot. Hopefully one of the other women will surprise us pleasantly. Very unreliable though.

Even hockey has what 3 really good teams. 3 good teams who on their day can beat anyone with Indian being one of them.

Below top 7 is all average.

Same as rugby union.

Cricket is no different. 3 great teams. 3 very good teams who on their day can win against anyone in odi t20. In tests probably 5 top teams. Rest are average to mediocre.

If you look at tests records in rugby union then outside big 3 rest are all shite. Australia actually isn't one of big 3. They have a horrible record vs SA and nz.

Hockey ain't popular anywhere.Cricket is followed in places like India and England.Even Zim gets big crowds.

Maybe Netherlands is the only place where it's popular, but there isn't much money in it.

Hockey has 3 European powerhouses that are non existent in cricket:

Netherlands

Belgium

Germany

Then you have

Australia

New Zealand

South Africa

England

Spain

All of the above can beat India on a given day. Then you have

Argentina

South Korea

Japan

Malaysia

Who can give India a run for their money and not easy beats by any stretch.

Thats 13 quality teams, a lot more than cricket.

Most of these countries are ametuers, they don't get paid.

And ind hockey players are terrible, they do get good salary but quality is rubbish.

You are just trolling here, India won bronze at the last Olympics by beating Germany which is no mean feat, if you want rubbish look at Pakistan. Absolute trash.

They are not all amateurs, a lot of them play hockey leagues around the world and the lucrative HIL is back again this year.

Aussie players were on a $40k pa contract per year back in 2016, am sure it is a lot higher now + earnings from playing hockey leagues they are not destitute as some people tend to think.

40 k per annum tells you the story but least they get a contract. Others don't even have that.

Not in bilaterals. Like the test format for hockey. Only 3 or 5 maximum good teams. Rest are all mediocre.

In world cup format sure.

Then cricket too has decent amount of quality sides. Probably around 7 ish

In t20 anyone can win really. That way there is more quality sides. Afghan made it to semis. Can a Afghan calibre team in hockey make it to semis? Doubt it.

Indian hockey players get crap money too tbf. Aus hockey players are state sponsored. I know a pro hockey player that did represent aus when he was younger. His private school got him the scholarship to Austrakian institute of sport. He gets put on A accelerated program at university. He has to maintain grades to ensure his scholarship is intact and he will also be required to travel to play for his country. Everything is coveted though. So AIS provides him everything for free and hey gets paid like a stipend.

Also his college fees are fully waived. So pretty good tbh. You get to train eat like an athlete and play for free.

He did do side jobs here and there though to support his gf and to save for a house.

But yea pay isn't much however everything is sponsored.

Yeah there is no money for these countries. It's not a very popular sport. But in India the players are paid well ,also the cost of living is low here.

Maybe the league in India can bring in some money.

Don't know why I am getting very Rio 2016 type vibes from this.

In London 2012 we punched above weight won 6 then Rio 2016 was a big disappointment with just 3.

In Tokyo there was a genuine chance of going double digit but 7 with 1 gold in Athletics was still the best performance in our history by some margin.

Aditi, Deepak Punia and Women's hockey team missed out by very small margins. Atanu, Kamalpreet and a few others were in contention too.

This time PV Sindhu, Men's hockey team, Men's wrestling.. in these we are sure not going to medal. So unless some lesser names step up, the tally is likely  to go down from the last time.

Keeping expectations low, but will cheer for the team.
