Disappointment?

It was our B team ( India B was the youngsters) the last time and Gukesh was only 16. Except that game against Nodirbek, he had a stellar tournament.
3rd place in the last edition was us announcing to the world that we have arrived on the World Stage.

I did. But I’ve logged after our T20WC win. Don’t go around accusing me of laziness. :nono:

No no, I won't do that of course.

I won't go around upsetting the mods, at least not the efficient ones.

With this team and the current standings - anything less than a resounding Gold for the Men would be a major dissapointment.

If not now, then when ?

All players are in form.

The thing to note even though we have delivered dominating performances relative to teams like Vietnam, China and Iran who are trailing by just 1 point - all of this will count for nothing if we lose a match and they don't.  It could mean we fall behind by 1 point in the worst case.

I would prefer smaller victory margins - but winning every match  ----compared to -----crushing victories in almost all matches and then losing 1 key match that is the Gold medal decider.

Board pairings are super critical. Can't afford to be complacent.

What do those decimal numbers on the matchups at the bottom of the board mean? Chance of winning?  What is a +ve vs -ve number?

A positive means white is winning. A negative means black is winning.

For reference , the relative value of the various pieces:

pawn - 1

knight/ bishop- 3

rook- 5

queen- 9

So if White is +1.1 its as good as saying he is a pawn up given the position.

Engines use a concept called Centpawns which equals 1/100th a pawn.

A poorly placed pawn on the board is not as good as a well placed pawn, but far better than not having a pawn at all.

So the engine assigns a value relative to the position. Same is true for the other pieces as well.

Gukesh beats Wei Yi.

2 Knights vs a Rook and equal pawns end game.

Both Men and Women are now 7/7.

Gukesh is destined for greatness.

One of the most amazing sequences of moves I have seen, under time pressure. Just 18 years old, good that you took 2 autographs of his.

Got a bit alarmed when I saw Vidit being rested. What a day!!!!!

Beating China back to back days, hockey and chess :isalute:

Apparently Harikrishna has spent a couple of years in China and played in their league tournaments. He knows the players. Familiarity over form?

Either ways he got a draw.

I went to France in May/June and my Schengen is still valid.

RN I am seriously contemplating going for the final two rounds to Budapest.

Could make it a hat trick if signatures.

Extremely proud of Gukesh.

Would upvote this a 100 times if I could. It was the far more experienced Wei Yi who crumbled under pressure.

Gukesh found Ke4 to prevent the rook lining up on the file with the passer.

Never did I think I’d stay up at midnight watching Chess!

C’est la vie.
