Except that game against Nodirbek, he had a stellar tournament. 3rd place in the last edition was us announcing to the world that we have arrived on the World Stage. Paris Olympics

rangeelaraja Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 With this team and the current standings - anything less than a resounding Gold for the Men would be a major dissapointment. If not now, then when ? All players are in form. The thing to note even though we have delivered dominating performances relative to teams like Vietnam, China and Iran who are trailing by just 1 point - all of this will count for nothing if we lose a match and they don't. It could mean we fall behind by 1 point in the worst case. I would prefer smaller victory margins - but winning every match ----compared to -----crushing victories in almost all matches and then losing 1 key match that is the Gold medal decider. Board pairings are super critical. Can't afford to be complacent. Mariyam 1

What is a +ve vs -ve number?

What is a +ve vs -ve number? A positive means white is winning. A negative means black is winning. For reference , the relative value of the various pieces: pawn - 1 knight/ bishop- 3 rook- 5 queen- 9 So if White is +1.1 its as good as saying he is a pawn up given the position. bharathh and Vickydev 2
Mariyam Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Engines use a concept called Centpawns which equals 1/100th a pawn. A poorly placed pawn on the board is not as good as a well placed pawn, but far better than not having a pawn at all. So the engine assigns a value relative to the position. Same is true for the other pieces as well. Vickydev and bharathh 1 1
randomGuy Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Open section we will draw against China. Ding didn't play today else we could have got ding vs gukesh game. In women section, we will probably win thanks to Vantika Agarwal. Mariyam 1
randomGuy Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Actually it could be more comprehensive win in women's section as vaishali is also +1.5 Mariyam 1
Gollum Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 What an endgame by Gukesh, takes down Wei Yi. Clutch, genius. Materpiece, Magnus Carlsen would be proud of such a squeeze. India defeats China, extends the lead Mariyam, randomGuy and Vickydev 2 1
Gollum Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Vaishali also won on board 2. Women beat #2 Georgia 3-1. Both men and women on 14/14 points. Vickydev and Mariyam 2
Mariyam Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Gukesh beats Wei Yi. 2 Knights vs a Rook and equal pawns end game. Both Men and Women are now 7/7. Gukesh is destined for greatness. randomGuy, Vickydev and bharathh 2 1

Either ways he got a draw. Gollum and Vickydev 2

Could make it a hat trick if signatures. Extremely proud of Gukesh. Edited September 18, 2024 by Mariyam randomGuy, Gollum and Vickydev 1 2

Gukesh found Ke4 to prevent the rook lining up on the file with the passer. Never did I think I’d stay up at midnight watching Chess! C’est la vie. Gollum and Vickydev 2
