Stupidity. Never understood this iPhone hype after 3GS was overtaken by many other brands.

Even then - I can't understand the appeal of spending so much money on a phone. Personally, find that a phone between 20-30k is more than good enough for me. My prev phone Mi 10 has been with me for 4 yrs now and needs no upgrading. Camera is good, storage is sufficient and I can do everything I need to with it. Dont understand why ppl spend so much on phones. In the ugly cases ppl put their phones - you can't really make out the difference between a 1 lakh phone and a 20k phone.

Simple reason, show off.

People want to portray themselves as cool and rich than the others, Apple during the era of Steve Jobs quality products with high cost, which is enough to attract the people who want to call themselves as "elite" and separate from "masses".

Post Steve Jobs era iphone is not offering much innovation, Tim Cook though is using smartly the brand name to maintain hype around it.

Usually, people are in the Apple eco system - Mac, iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, & Apple TV, along w/ AirPods, AirPod Max, Beats, etc.

As for upgrades, it should depend on your use case.

Apple tends to make incremental changes. Below are some of the major changes (mainly referring to Pro models where applicable):

iPhone 10 - bezels and home button gone.

iPhone 14 - USB C port (helps those who transfer ProRes files and offers convenience as most other devices are likely to use USB C). But if you don’t care for USB-C, it is not a big deal.

Next key upgrade is when Apple removes the notch or island from the screen.

iPhone 16 is probably for those who are using iPhone 11 and earlier models, and those who are looking to get into AI (but better to wait for iPhone 17 for that) and want a better camera set up with the camera control button (I have not looked at the specs in detail but these are going to be the key features).

I have no concerns on them, problem is with those folks who aren't part of ecosystem and don't even understand 50% of the phone features just buy it coz it looks cool.
Most of the casual iphone users, they aren't using the phone for any creative work for ex. Content Creation. They just use it coz someone in their friend circle has an iphone and it gives them "rich" vibes.

I have same gripe on high end Samsung or any other Android phones as well. Most people who buy it, they don't use it at full potential but rather as a show-off, it impact others and ultimately everyone starts to out-bid each other in race of buying expensive phones.

People have gone mad.

Also, as iphone sales in China is on decline due to Huawei's rise, Apple is paying much attention on India to boost sales.

The amount of ads you see these days sums up how hard they're trying to gain market in India.
