This is what they saw in that countries. Government data does not support that So only reliable survey or data tells the true picture which clearly say height is declining. Ideally that is right bro. But in present case, it is most definitely incorrect. Another way of looking at it (although not a proper way) - do you find more 5'4 n lower youngsters or more 5'10 n above? The answer is most definitely 5'10 n above. The average of 5'4 and 5'10 is 5'7. Average Indian youngsters height in 2024 is about 5'7 , and not 5'5. Ignore this survey. raki05

When non-vegetarian is taller, it is due to meat and when vegetarians are taller and stronger, it is due to "genetic predisposition"? Ye faltu ka logic hai... IMHO it is about good diet(veg or non-veg doesn't matter), climate, physical activity levels etc. Because we have never seen predominantly vegetarian diet or high nutrition vegetarian diets GETTING taller, but we have seen plenty of times and continue to see with chinese and vietnamese today, most euros a century ago, that increase in meat intake ---> increase in height over whole population. Ie, we know there is strong correlation between increased meat in diet and increased height of population. We've never seen it (or at least that i know of) for a population that eats well as a veggie predominant diet or got better nutrition through predominant veggie increase in consumption. Indian meat consumption is nowhere comparable to any east Asian or other nations. Same with Pak BD SL etc. Non vegetarian food here is only for taste rather than protein that's why people take 1-2 piece of meat with lots of oily gravy with naan or rice. This is even more harmful. As far north Indian taller logic. Only few castes are taller which are mostly lactose tolerant. These people can definitely dring 2-3 litre of milk or its products which give them enough protein Vicks57
Vicks57
Reduce carbs and increase protein in your diets. Start strength training. Try to inhale clean air. This is only possible for people who live in rural India. Then, you will definitely reach your genetic potential. Right now, the youngsters (18 to 25) are 5 7' to 5 9' these days. Yeah Indians are far off to reach their genetic potential yet. I suppose North India & especially North West will get to it sooner than later along with South India. Kerala's super high HDI indicates in its taller median age population. Super impressive feat. I need to find out about Lankan average median height as they have tremendous genetic potential with highest HDI tag in South Asia. East Indians have climatic and genetic barriers to cross...which ain't happening. Their genetic potential is lesser & of course with a god awful HDI index. Race is the same for all castes... what you are calling genetics is hundreds of years of injustices and exploitation of Dalits. But it can be reversed in just a few generations worth of resources and opportunity. Meaning a dalit from punjab/haryana etc. will be as tall and as strong as upper caste folks from these states if given the resources for a few generations. randomGuy
According to a 2018 survey released by the registrar general of India, Rajasthan (74.9%), Haryana (69.25%), Punjab (66.75%), and Gujarat (60.95%) have the highest percentage of vegetarians, followed by Madhya Pradesh (50.6%), Uttar Pradesh (47.1%), Maharashtra (40.2%), Delhi (39.5%), Uttarakhand (27.35%), Karnataka (21.1%), Assam (20.6%), Chhattisgarh (17.95%), Bihar (7.55%), Jharkhand (3.25%), Kerala (3.0%), Odisha (2.65%), Tamil Nadu (2.35%), Andhra Pradesh (1.75%), West Bengal (1.4%), and Telangana (1.3%). In 2021, Pew Research Center released the results of a survey of over 29,999 Indians throughout the country which included questions on dietary preferences. According to this study, around 39% of the overall Indian population identifies as vegetarian (the survey did not specify a type of vegetarianism and left the definition of the term up to the respondent).[28] In terms of religion, Jains were found to be the most vegetarian at 92%, followed by Jats (75%), Sikhs (59%), Hindus (44%), Buddhists (25%), Christians (10%), and finally Muslims (8%).[28] Among Hindus, however, there are wide regional variations with regard to the percentage of people identifying as vegetarian, with 71% of North Indian Hindus identifying as vegetarian, followed by 61% of Central Indians, 57% of West Indians, 30% of South Indians, 19% of Northeast Indians, and 18% of East Indians identifying as vegetarian.[28] There are also caste differences in rates of vegetarianism, with 40% of lower caste Hindus identifying as vegetarian compared to 53% for general category Hindus. If an absolute poverty woman who eats only once a day and has babies and can afford to feed the baby only once a day, those babies willl grow up to have stunted growth. You can see that many construction workers from UP/Bihar/AP/TN all seem to be short/frail men. Nutrition for babies is very much important to grow normal average height. If the nation's avergae height is decreasing, it means there are many babies growing up in absolute poverty. Genetics impacting heigjt is just anecdotal evidence. Ranvir
I'm 6ft2. My Dad at his peak was 5'6, Mum 5'1. I drank lots of milk as a child and attribute my height to that. Also had lots of daal and also ate meat on the weekends.

Yeah problem starts actually during baby period itself no denying. But genetics & climatic conditions do come into play eventually... With nutrition being the obvious biggest factor at play. There is a reason as per data East Indians have lesser median age height compared to other regions. The UP Bihar Odiya Labour all have same disadvantages. Biharis actually eat a lot of meat as well. Also I reckon Punjab and JK have highest upper caste percentage as per data (there was some electoral data ) that around 66% people in JK are Upper Caste (Muslims have caste system too) while around 52% people in Punjab are UC's. Those were abnormally high number compared to rest of the country. coffee_rules
