My mom has been a criminal lawyer (of some repute :proud:) for 40 + years. In one of her earliest cases as a junior litigant, her team was threatened by a gang for appearing against them. So all of the people were provided with a security detail by the state government. My mom being the youngest had only a havaldar who was to accompany her always. She always speaks very fondly of him. He was an old almost retired gentleman who couldn't even hurt a fly.

The entire thing must have taken a toll on her mental make up, although she doesn't make much of it.

Another stress point was that she had to give the havaldar the slip when stepping out to meet my dad. Dating problems in the 80s.

And later she had to raise me, which I am sure couldn't have been easy either.

All in all, she has handled a fair level of stress successfully, and managed to keep her hair intact! Credit where due.

Mght need ur moms help for me… with some people driving me nuts:hide:

You have to mentally condition yourself to do so. I am a bong who gave up sugar a few years ago, so you must know how difficult this is, particulary for a bong with a sweet tooth like me ( i have eaten an entire pound and half of pure chocolate in my youth or had like 20 rasmalai in one sitting before).

My first six months were very tough, because i was doing the normal 'nahee its bad for me' avoidance while being tempted. So instead i tried mental conditioning - every time i pictured sugar in my head, i associated brown cyrstals ( i always use brown sugar as i like its taste better) with ground dehydrated human poop in a sewage treatment plant.
After a few weeks of thinking of 'dried ground human poop' everytime i thought of having sugar in my coffee, i found that now my brain is conditioned to think 'ew sugar gross'.

So now i dont have to struggle with it, i am happy with 'ew sugar gross' mental image, coz it takes away the temptation now.

I know you are going to e-kill me for this post but since you mentioned sweets, here goes:

In my very humble opinion: The two things from Bengal I really like are the sweets and the singers who emanate from the state and the various musical gharanas  ( even the Rabindra music). If I were a Bengali who grew up in Kolkata I would have died of diabetes by the time I hit 15. That is how much I love Bengali sweets. Especially Sondesh.

It is Bengali literature, especially of the early 1900s that I find a tad over rated. Is Devdas good? Of course. Is it that good? NO.

And the lesser I speak about the general work ethic, the better.

Okay i am gonna hate on you a bit for the bolded part. No bong likes Sondesh. Sondesh to us is like just aloo bharta with no masaala in it - its dry, its not that sweet, its not that flavourful and you always need water to choke it down lol.

But yeah, i gave it up when i hit 40 because i figured 40 is when u gotta get serious about your health or lose ur final chance at healthy life.

@zen You are a law grad?

No but when I used to work at a corporate, I used to negotiate contracts with customers/clients globally so I had to be aware of various business laws and regulations.

News to me!

On one of my work trips to your city, the client, a Marwari business conglomerate based out of Kolkata took us to a street in Shyam Bazaar area to a non descript but crowded shop and said that this place is where the locals come to have Sondesh. I purchased nearly 2 kgs (including water) of Sondesh that day.

Sweet Bengal (its a chain) in Mumbai also has Sondesh , as do many others, but its just not the same.

we mostly dont like sondesh because sondesh is like the sweet of choice for every aunty or uncle who ever comes to visit you and you just grow bored of eating it as a kid.

its the most lazy way out of taking a token sweets gift for bongs, because sondesh is the least messy sweet of them.
