Gukesh is more of a calculator. He is still very young and needs to develop the skills of intuition, tactics and positional play which are extremely important for shorter time formats.

Intuition - is a god gift, you either have it or you don't. Anand has it. Carlsen has it.

From what I have seen - look at the greatest chess players in history( maybe few exceptions ) - the peak ceiling is in the mid-20s.

Gukesh is still extremely young.

I feel really bad for Gukesh, he looks down and out in the press conference.

I hope his team and support staff take good care of him and ensure his morale is high.

Not sure if many are aware here...but he took the services of Paddy Upton ( the sports psychologist who was with our cricket team ) ...

So he has been doing all the right things.

I think our media, our chess streamers and fans put extraordinary pressure of expectations on Gukesh.

Players at this age blossom when there is less pressure of expectations.

Gukesh has never played a 1:1 intense match like this...and is just finding out it that match play is very different from tournament play.

Gukesh again showing his preparation has been much better than Ding's coming into this match. Very solid play so far.

Ding has to play faster and manoeuvre through this sharp game

Gukesh's end game skills need a lot of improvement. He squandered a winning position to a losing position today and yesterday he couldn't convert a winning position.

He is just finding it tough once he is out of prep.. Ding OTOH seems to raise his game after struggling in the opening

Anish within 15 seconds was able to see the winning knight position. You can only go so far just by calculating all the time especially during end games when time is at a premium. Now he even lost the time advantage.

With all due respect to his phenomenal achievements, Gukesh is not worthy of being a world champion.

Whether or not Ding is, is debatable.  Gukesh is certainly not.

Hopefully after this,  the idiotic Indian hype machine will shut up forever, as we are our biggest enemies. Always.

Think it's mostly pressure tbh. Probably getting more anxious to drive the advantage after a strong opening lands him into these positions.

Good game this. Probably will be a draw again

Most interesting game of the match due to material imbalance..Anish, Sagar commentary also great in chessbase.

Could have done Qg2 for the 3rd time, but instead chooses to screw himself over with a check.  Immaturity and bravado when you are a rook down.

Can't understand this stupidity from a player of his caliber.

Watching classical chess is like watching test matches in the early 2000s and before.

FIDE should do something to make them more result oriented.

Otherwise Rapid and Blitz chess will kill classical chess like T20 cricket is now subsidizing Test matches.

I started with 30+0 time online....then to 10+0,  below that it is pure degeneration ...now I am just an addict (like a drug addict) who play strictly 1+0 bullet, nothing else ...I deleted my profile(s) on chess sites long back, deleted apps ....it is just time waste....we all have limited time in this life, wasting on chess isn't worth it, but 1 classical game is better than 100 Blitz/ bullet games.

It's how the sport is at the level of these players. Most games will be draws

Rapid with increments is the ideal format for viewership IMO. Also enough time for quality to shine

Ding camp's tactics are amply clear

1. Play ultra solidly in the classical format and wait for an over eager and aggressive Gukesh to take all the risks to get a result and blunder in the pursuit.

2. This works best for them because if the match is tied in the classical format Ding is the red hot favorite in the rapid tie-break stage.

Ding is the #2 ranked player in the Rapid format, Gukesh is not even in the top 40. There is a 100+ rating points difference between Gukesh in Ding in the rapid format.

Just for a historical perspective - Carlsen could not win a single classical game against Caruana in the 2018 World Championship- but routed him because of the rapid.

Infact, Carlsen could not get past even a well prepared Karjakin in the 2016 World Championship in the classical stage. It took the rapid format for him to retain the title.

And last time around - Ding beat Nepo in the rapids to take the championship.

Rapid is a huge weakness for Gukesh.

2 white and 3 black games to go for Gukesh.  He needs to play out of his skin to win 1 of the 2 whites and then just stonewall Ding for the remaining games.
