Do Chess players also have something called form?

Kind of. But "form" tends to last long. Magnus is still the best player in the World irrespective of who wins the World Championship. Anand & Kramnik ruled the early 2000s, Kasparov before that.

Also, different players adapt to different formats better. E.g. Nepo was very good in candidates' tournament where each player plays an opponent only twice, but terrible in long format World Championship where the same player is played in multiple games over multiple days. He starts making elementary mistakes in later games.

Good question. Maybe lack of form is more pronounced than good form per se but also short lived for top players. It's usually a bad tournament or two when going through a rut

Overlooking easy tactics, making blunders, forgetting the sequence of moves to lines they have spent hours studying... Most players seem to go through this at least once

Gukesh lost :((

I was saying this before also. The reason Ding has been largely inactive or not playing well is because he is reserving all his best plays for this match. Gukesh played too many tournaments leading up to the World Championship. He should have instead used the time for preparation and kept some of his strategies secret. Ding had been learning from Gukesh's game and was able to surprise him right at the beginning.

A loss with white pieces is a big setback for Gukesh.

Gukesh took the initiative. Advanced his King's side pawns quite early in the game. Ensured that there would be no draw. He went for the kill. Great intent. When you have such clarity in thought and planning, you take into account the fact that risks don't always reward. Risky play is un Gukesh like, but planning in detail and prepping openings is. All said and done, this is a risk he planned for.

I think Gukesh has shown that he is out here to win it as fast as he can. I am extremely optimistic.

Can't wait for game 2.
