Seems strange to announce a retirement mid overseas tour. Wonder what is going on behind the scenes? Sharma and Gambhir seem to be a horrible combo who have created a toxic environment.

Hats off to Ashwin though a clutch player with bat and ball unlike most on the Retirement Village.

As someone from TN, he is the first player from the state who actually made it big enough to be called a Legend. TN had the talent, players like Mukund and DK should have made it big, but they didn’t have the mental strength like Ashwin.

pinning my hopes the next big 3- Sai Kishore, Sai sudharshan and Washington..

As per report he declared his inention after Perth test. But he was told to play at the Adelaide oval . He could have told he is retiring in the last match if he knew he wsa going to retire at that time.

Overseas he suffered in comparison to Jadeja as an all round package. Only one of them could play and Jadeja made the cut most of the time.

I think his fielding went against him in overseas tests.

I think key reason was also that he was part of a lot of these tours and was playing only handful of games. You don’t want to be hanging around especially with your best days behind you. Good call and i get his thinking totally. In a way he did not make a big deal about it.

I know we all appreciate him but bowlers in India will always get less notice.

All time great !!

Yes it was the emergence of Amit Mishra in that series iirc. Sort of similar then

hope Sundar is better than Mishra though

One of the noblest ways to go. Now Washi will get a look in at least in pitches like SCG where India can play 2 spinners. Washi proved that he is ready to take over in the NZ series, and here Ashwin gracefully steps aside after one bad series. Sure, the decline was obvious for 2-3 years but he somehow made up every time, couldn't happen against Kiwis.

Similar to Kumble in 2008 BGT where his shoulder had completely given up, and was getting outbowled by Sehwag.

Wish more Indian legends are like this, ready to hand over reins to youngsters.

Sundar has shown all the right signs and needs to be backed so he can keep developing. He outbowled both Ashwin and Jadeja in the series against NZ. He keeps being shuttled in and out of the side but now with Ashwin's retirement, I hope he is given a run of matches to be the main spinner in the side home or abroad. Jadeja is batting well but with age his bowling also seems to be on the decline so it is high time there is a younger person who is being developed as the lead spinner.

Jadeja if he stays will don the role of 2nd 3rd spinner. Kuldeep will be the main spinner now

Now we must completely stop following Indian cricket except for Bumrah spells.

Just imagine Washington Sundar becoming New York Badsurat (the underground metros are ugly there) once all firangis start hammering him.

NZ series must have broken him, especially the backlash. He was MOTS in previous NZ visits, all 3 of them (2012, 2016, 2021). So to have this kind of shocker against his bunnies showed the mirror.

Still think we got way too many marginal calls (impact BS) against us there, and of course the worst captaincy in the history of the sport.

Yeah but Kuldeep is not available nor has any recent form to work his way into the side. If he is fit and performing then obviously he is the better spinner but he seems to have dropped off the radar completely.

I have given up on this sport, only memories remain.
