2025 chess season tracker

New era with an Indian world champion after more than a decade, and India sweeping both men's and women's Olympiad in Budapest last year. We also finished well with Humpy winning gold in world rapid in NYC in December.

Odd years are somewhat dry but we still have the World Cup and rumours circulating that India could host it. The freestyle chess tour which is challenging FIDE is sure to attract eyeballs. Possible World Team Championship (unlike Olympiad only 10 teams participate, but schedule off post pandemic) and ofc Wijk aan Zee ongoing.

Mods @Lord @Austin 3:!6 can pin this instead since we usually have good participation in chess threads on this forum. We can track all chess related developments this year over here instead of opening multiple threads.

Think this is the year Carlsen, Nakamura and their minions will break away from FIDE and do their own little thing. Good riddance if that happens. Can't keep the rest of the chess world hostage to satiate their egos and greed.

Anand has also withdrawn on short notice from the freestyle chess tour which kicks off in Germany in February. Uzbek GM, Sindarov to replace him. Maybe as FIDE VP he has access to inside info public doesn't have. Also the flare up in NYC in world rapid, where manchild Carlsen couldn't get his way and threw a hissy fit. Hope Gukesh and co. maintain their distance from Carlsen's gang.

@Gollum Does freestyle get you rating points on the FIDE circuit?

In any case this event co-organized by Magnus doesn't have FIDE's blessing, so won't fetch points.

Even if FIDE were to organize such events, logically shouldn't count, no? Because goal is to select candidates for classical world champion, freestlye/960/FR is a different game altogether.

Gukesh draws against Nodirbek, great save from a lost position. This is going to be 'the' rivalry of this era.

11 year old Faustino Oro beat Divya Deshmukh in the challengers section, his second win !!!!

Yeah was a great game that one. Oro using b5, Divya trying a lot of tricks but Oro played the best moves. One of the most tactically fun games to follow for fans

An Uzbek GM  refused to shake hands with Vaishali, she won the game.

Can't believe we have to put up with this regressive mindset in 2025.

He shook Divya's hands and did a fist bump as well.

Whatever is the reason ---it is extremely disrespectful,  the least he could have done is nodded his head or acknowledged Vaishali with some decency and respect.

I am not sure why everybody here at ICF thinks so highly of Chessbase India. You would not find them asking tough questions this Uzbek joker for his behavior.

I said it before here and I will say it again - Chessbase India will stoop to any pathetic level for views and engagement, by being in the good books of everyone by just sucking up.

They sucked up to Kramnik after he accused the Indian team Olympiad team of cheating.  Not a bloody word against Carlsen and his narcissist tantrums.

I was right about Kramnik becoming senile, and Carlsen being a third rate arrogant human being ( which has been proved beyond doubt in the Rapid and Blitz World Championship ) .

And believe you me, I will be proven right against Chessbase India,  over the years, I have come to recognize people who suck up to anyone and everyone to grow without an iota of dignity.

Sagar Shah of chessbase India is that creature. Instead of honest journalism asking fair questions and not afraid to ask tough questions, he sucks upto to every chess celebrity for youtube engagement farming. Ultimate cringe. Utterly shameless.

Chess prodigy at three: He’s internationally ranked but is confused and scared by the limelight

Anish Sarkar began playing chess on a train and now practices eight hours a day after becoming the world’s youngest ever FIDE-rated player
Chess prodigy at three: He’s internationally ranked but is confused and scared by the limelight

January 4 saw a ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the students at the Dhanuka Dhanseri Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy in Kolkata, India. The hall was full of proud parents, early-school children, and teenagers who show promise at the state and national levels.

They were called one-by-one for prizes by the institute’s founder, industrialist Chandra Kumar Dhanuka, and their coach, India’s second grandmaster, Dibyendu Barua.

The gathered journalists had their attention focused on a shy three-year-old sitting in a corner. Almost too young for school, he avoided the cameras whenever he realized he was being filmed. Finally, Anish Sarkar was called on stage and the cameras kept on clicking. Requests for photos continued.

Finally, Anish had had enough. “No photos, no more photos,” he protested. His mother and coach intervened, saying he was cranky because he had to leave a practice game in the class downstairs.

There was a little disappointment around as everyone wanted more of the chess prodigy. After the photo session, Anish rushed back to complete his game.

“He spends over eight hours a day playing chess. He enjoys nothing more,” his mother R Chatterjee (name changed at her request) explained to RT, as he was planning his next moves.

Anish, who turns four on Sunday, took the chess world by storm by becoming the youngest International Chess Federation (FIDE) rated player in November. He was all of three years and eight months old.

Born on January 26, 2021, Anish made his debut in competitive chess with the West Bengal state Under-9 Open in October, securing 5.5 out of 8 points and finishing 24th. He defeated two rated players, Arav Chatterjee and Ahilaan Baishya.

Bhai, Indians by nature (most cases) when dealing with foreigners (especially fairer skin folks) are servile, desperately seek validation, don't like confrontations. When it is internal matter, against our own people, all our aggression comes out in full flow.

Why should Sagar Shah be any different? At least he behaves like this with everybody, doesn't make exceptions. He was even sucking up to Bangladeshi players in the recent Olympiad.

Look at Chessbase India coverage of it ....not a single word on that Uzbek clowns behavior or utter lack of courtesy or respect towards a daughter of India.

@Gollum - Watch the below video and see the headline of the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRzJbkYilSw

" Shastang Pranam to Carlsen " , on his wife accidentally falling in Carlsen's path.

Sagar Shah selling his wife's dignity too for views and to suck up to players .

And to " be in the good books and liked by all " at the cost of every ounce of self-respect.

Sagar Shah is an utter disgrace. As a proud Gujarati ( and Gujju's are generally very upright and conscious of their dignity ),  I feel ashamed that this brown nosing pig is a Gujarati.
