So Keymer won, which was a huge surprise for me. I basically stopped following after Gukesh's exit, and thought Carlsen and Caruana would be too strong but seems Vincent had other plans.

I think somebody like Gukesh would probably outgrind others given a year or so,  opening theories won't be impossible for them to develop for the different variations/randomizations

Will be interesting how the organizers go from here. They've spent a lot on this venture and can see them inviting more GMs for sure. Nakamura suggesting he is going to focus on this more than regular Classical Chess( probably cause of prize money), Hans is going to be there too in the next one

@Gollum @rangeelaraja @randomGuy@Mariyam@Tillu did you folks follow freestyle/Fischer random?

Haven't followed this event.

My experience is that rating swings ( on Lichess) are far greater at Fischer random than at regular chess. For instance, if I win a game at regular chess, say blitz, my rating would go from 1877 to 1884. On Fischer random if I were to win a game my rating would go from 1877 to 2063.

I think I have a better idea than fischer random. I.e. to give players computer generated multiple equal middle game, end game positions to play. This would be more fun to play and to follow than a fischer random game which starts from all of the pieces on the board.

Not following any Chess at the moment. Just following the scores.

Aravind Chidambaram with a live rating of 2745 points has surpassed Vishy Anand and is the Indian No: 4 and world no: 14 currently.

Aravind scored a win against Anish Giri with black pieces and is currently leading the Prague Chess Masters 2025 with 5/7 points.

Aravind will replace Harikrishna in next Olympiad, making our squad even stronger. Another product of GM Ramesh's academy.

Gukesh, Pragg, Arjun, Vidit, Aravind.....good luck to rest of the world.

I used to follow Adhiban Baskaran's career closely few years back, he is facing an unreal decline. 5 years back looked like he would be a steady 2700, now in lowly 2500s. Don't hear much from him as well, hope he is fine.

Aravindh Chithambaram wins Prague Masters. Late bloomer, I feel like he can have an Aronian like career. Live rating 2743, world number 14. Guy had a tough upbringing, for a change a bright prospect not from Chennai, he is from Madurai.

Pranav world junior champion, 4th Indian to do so in the open section. Spassky, Karpov, Kasparov, Anand being some illustrious winners in the past.

Among women, Humpy, Harika, Soumya Swaminathan, Divya have achieved this before.

We can have a supertournament just with Indian players henceforth. Make the nationals the biggest event of the year, like how USSR/Russian championship was in the past. India must be the torch bearer of classical, as Carlsen and his minions try to put the spotlight on other formats.

Offtopic.

India beats Macao, China 4-2 in Ice Hockey at Harbin in Asian Winter Games. Didn't know we have an Ice Hockey team. The team I read is full of Ladhaki Players. Hope the government supports them with good funding.

Haven't heard much about Nihal Sarin either in a long time.

Perhaps India's best bet for a bullet/blitz tournament win.

He was hyphenated with Pragg during the lockdown years. He has slipped away in classical chess.

Nihal had the keeda of online bullet/blitz. Unfortunately, his classical chess or even OTB speed chess never developed. Thought he would be in Pragg/Gukesh class, still has age on his side. Aronian was a late developer, even Aravind now.

The Norway Chess handle is really staying on top of the events....

Surprised they are reporting Gukesh's trip to the Balaji temple in Tirumula, Tirupati.

Chess is like cricket in few ways. You need indian players for that reach and TRP.

Somehow,  team sports are much MORE engaging.  It tickles our ancestral memory, where men had to form a team and go on exploration/hunting and war. And women swooning over the victors.

Aravindh Chithambaram most talented after five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand: RB Ramesh

He was highly rated by likes of Polgar, Leko and Svidler circa 2013-14, but then gradually faded away. Hope Ramesh sir's words are true.

Now only he will concentrate on openings as well and a dedicated not a parttime second. In his interview he said he was mainly using middlegame endgame skills to reach 2700 and his target is 2800 in 2 yrs.

Was thinking if he is that good without openings work, he would do really well in chess 960.
