This is very interesting, because there is uncertainty around how the pitch in Dubai will behave. Going with Harshit Rana instead of picking one of the two spinners, who are very out-of-it right now, can be a very strategic option even if the pitch is slow. Hardik and Harshit actually have good numbers on slow pitches in the IPL, bowling their cutters and slow bouncers.

 

Only time will tell what exactly pans out against Bangladesh on the 20th.

The whole point is that they don't want a back up opener. Gill and Rohit will open in all matches. If one of them is injured, they'll ask Rahul to open, and play Pant in the middle order

It seems the TM is not bothered about backup opener. Coz this is a very short tournament.  Only 3 matches in group stage.  Followed by 1 KO and 1 Final. So, Max 5 matches if a team reaches the Final.     Chances of injury are very less.

Anytime they play a third spinner it will likely be Varun or Kuldeep.

I am assuming they will likely unleash Varun on unsuspecting Kiwis who have historically played Kuldeep well @Nikhil_cric

Against Pakistan Kuldeep has a great record so he will definitely play against them.. provided he doesn't get thrashed by Banglas first up.

Against Pakistan Kuldeep has a great record so he will definitely play against them.. provided he doesn't get thrashed by Banglas first up.

Kiwis generally play spin well.  We needed that extra pacer imo.   Shami destroyed them twice in the World Cup.

Batting depth gets compromised by playing extra pacer.  Don't think they will leave out either Kuldeep or Varun in a 3 spin attack.

I will play Varun over Kuldeep vs NZ.  NZ didn't look that comfortable vs Abrar who doesn't has as many variations... But they looked impressive against Shamsi.

Even if fully fit and in form, I would never play Kuldeep and Bumrah against Kiwis. Somehow Kiwis play those two big weapons of ours so easily, now it has become psychological as well.

I dont think the team management thinks it this level.

They will play it safe by playing allrounders ie Jadeja,Axar,Sundar

Maybe but why would you pick 5 spinners otherwise if you are not thinking about playing them at some point in the tournament?  Varun was definitely picked as a surprise weapon they will unleash at some point.
