Posting here so that it gets more traction. But probably the biggest sporting news of 2025 from India.

Our women's hockey team beat Netherlands (full strength from what I am reading) today in Kalinga, from 0-2 down to 2-2 and then in shootout. First time we have beaten them.

Dutch women are probably the most dominant international sporting team of the last 50 years, they can field 3 teams and sweep the podium in WC/Olympics. Have won the last 3 WCs, Olympics, and the scorelines read like cricket scores even in KOs against other top ranked teams.

I didn't watch the game and am kicking myself. Still remember how happy I was when our girls beat Aussies in Tokyo QF. If Aussie team is Hawkeye level threat, Dutch team is Thanos. Incredible achievement. Even 5-6 years ago we would lose to them 0-8, 0-9 and have like 20% possession and 1-2 circle entries only, that's how hopelessly mismatched we were.

Our women's ACT win last year was also brilliant. East Asian teams are very good there, China in fact won silver in Paris.

Good comeback story after the highs of 2018-20 and poor show in 21-23, we didn't even qualify to Paris Games.

Now world number 9.

Imagine how scared Kiwi batsman would have been seeing this guy run to them.

As long as they did not have guns, Kiwi batsmen would have been relieved...

only other match in Rawalpindi between Pak and BD is likely to be washed out , matches in Lahore and Karachi are safe.

Ah, Pakistan whitewash will be avoided due to match being washed out then...

hockey league is back. hopefully they become medal contenders in 10-15 years.

more economic progress and women participation in sports should get them there.

Hope it changes. For how long must India remain a one sport country? 1.4 billion population with fast growing economy should be more aspirational.

Unfortunately, field hockey isn't super interesting for spectators. It's not overly popular anywhere even tho many countries take part in it. It's a recreational or extra curricular for colleges in the US, Australia, parts of europe and parts of south America. You also won't see ton of investment in it or large stadiums.

I think India could do well in Tennis if there was good infrastructure access.

I feel like they scheduled this whole tournament in such a stupid way. Should have been Group A match, next day Group B match and so on and so forth but don't schedule back to back games for certain teams - which either causes early entry to semi or knocked out of the tournament like pak/bd, while we have no idea who is yet to go to the next round on the other group. Also, for the hosting team, should start their first game against the weakest in the group - makes it more interesting for the local crowd. Now the BD V PAK match is a useless match without any meaning to it. This was a first for me ... hosting team kicked out of the tournament in literally 4 f'ing days ...

BD-Pak match is not useless, its important for the future of ( if there is any ) Pakistan cricket. Hope BD will beat Pakistan and that will raise public pressure even more to get rid of the main culprit of murdering Pakistan cricket , particularly the butcher of Pakistan cricket named Mohsin Naqvi. If I was at Pindi, I would have gone to watch the match with DB flag to support BD team. BD is my 2nd least favorite team , only behind Pakistan team.

Rameej Raza said in an interview yesterday that the CT fixture for the host team (Pak) has been scheduled in an unfair manner.  According to him, Pak should hv played BD in the 1st or 2nd game in order to boost their self confidence & that would hv pushed them to a SF spot.   :hysterical:

That's true actually, they might have beaten BD and kept their Semi final chances and viewers interest alive till the last game with this schedule.

No but they wanted to emulate India by playing the toughest opponent first like we did in the WC2023 by playing against Australia.

Their pea brains couldn't comprehend the fact that these two are different tournaments with different formats.

in the context of the tournament - which is what this tournament is about - it is a dead rubber match. It has no meaning/value to the tournament other than individual accomplishments of the players or who finishes 7th or 8th out of the 8 team. But one thing I noticed about Pakistan team is that in a tournament, no matter how good/bad the team is, if there are many matches in the earlier phase of the tournament, they usually play bad and then start getting into rythm (T20 wc where they played the final, CT when the won it, etc). This is a constant thing with pak team, no matter which team they field. Now, if you ask me, playing BD for their first match would have been better for both team - espacially pakistan since they are the hosting nation.
