goose Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Lord’s to lose £4m in WTC final revenue after India fail to qualify Australia will play South Africa in final in June, but organisers had originally priced tickets at premium rate, believing India fan demand would outstrip supply Elizabeth Ammon Monday March 10 2025, 12.10pm, The Times Cricket Organisers had banked on India qualifying for the final, which will take place in June Lord’s is set to generate nearly £4million less in revenue for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final after India’s failure to qualify. Australia will face South Africa in the five-day Test match in June, but the absence of India has significantly curtailed the financial windfall expected by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), underscoring the financial influence of Indian cricket across the global game. India had been in the top two of the ICC World Test Championship table for most of the past year but fell to third and therefore failed to qualify for the final, having lost at home to New Zealand and then 3-1 to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at the end of 2024 and start of 2025. Ticket prices for Test matches at Lord’s were a subject of debate last summer, as England games were poorly attendAnticipating India’s participation, Lord’s had originally priced tickets at premium rates, confident that the demand from India cricket supporters would outstrip supply. However, once it became clear that India would not feature in the final, MCC opted to lower ticket prices. The decision intended to prioritise a fuller, more vibrant stadium over the prospect of a sparsely populated ground with higher-priced seats. MCC came under fire for their high ticket prices last year during England’s Test series against Sri Lanka, when only 9,000 people were in the ground to watch the fourth day, and subsequently promised a review of ticket pricing. The decision to be flexible with prices for the World Test Championship final was taken this year, with tickets now being sold at between £40 and £90 — about £50 cheaper than they had originally been priced, accounting for the loss in revenue. MCC members who bought tickets before the price drop have been refunded the difference. Tickets that went on sale in the first general public ticket window sold very well for the first four days, with another tranche of tickets being made available this month, while hospitality packages have proven very popular for the first three days (weekdays are most popular with corporate clients). It is a big year for Lord’s, with a Test match against India that sold out almost immediately for days one to four, a sold-out ODI against South Africa and a women’s ODI against India in July, which has attracted high demand. Lord’s will also host the final of the Hundred and a men’s mixed disability match against India in June. AuxiliA and nevada 2
