Lord’s to lose £4m in WTC final revenue after India fail to qualify

Australia will play South Africa in final in June, but organisers had originally priced tickets at premium rate, believing India fan demand would outstrip supply

Lord’s is set to generate nearly £4million less in revenue for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final after India’s failure to qualify.

Australia will face South Africa in the five-day Test match in June, but the absence of India has significantly curtailed the financial windfall expected by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), underscoring the financial influence of Indian cricket across the global game.

India had been in the top two of the ICC World Test Championship table for most of the past year but fell to third and therefore failed to qualify for the final, having lost at home to New Zealand and then 3-1 to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at the end of 2024 and start of 2025.

However, once it became clear that India would not feature in the final, MCC opted to lower ticket prices. The decision intended to prioritise a fuller, more vibrant stadium over the prospect of a sparsely populated ground with higher-priced seats.

MCC came under fire for their high ticket prices last year during England’s Test series against Sri Lanka, when only 9,000 people were in the ground to watch the fourth day, and subsequently promised a review of ticket pricing. The decision to be flexible with prices for the World Test Championship final was taken this year, with tickets now being sold at between £40 and £90 — about £50 cheaper than they had originally been priced, accounting for the loss in revenue.

It is a big year for Lord’s, with a Test match against India that sold out almost immediately for days one to four, a sold-out ODI against South Africa and a women’s ODI against India in July, which has attracted high demand. Lord’s will also host the final of the Hundred and a men’s mixed disability match against India in June.
