Timing of it is horrible. Unless they say this is effective from next census - 2031

Even then the announcement could have waited in current scenario. Everyone expected Pahalgam attacks to be priority.

Misplaced priorities. Why did it have to be announced when the whole nation is expecting for India to react to Pahalgam attacks.

Actually caste Census literally wouldn't change anything. It's data point. It just gets political brownies for bjp.

Of course, what they do with the data is what that matters. Will they use it get better benefit reach/spread for sub-categories of SC/STs/OBCs then it  is good. If they use it to go beyond 50% cutoff, force representation using the data and do what Congress is forcing it to do, then it is an issue. Just Census is not an issue.

But they opposed even taking the Caste Census and relented after opposition. They went back on Farm laws after protests. They might do whatever the oppistion wants. That's the crux of the problem.

Koi chad -waad nahin. He didn't want unqualified people for govt jobs. Even IG and RaGa (Data) opposed Mandal commission report and didn't want to do OBC reservation. Everything changed after Janataparty got into power since 1977, the Yadavas, JDUs, Devilalas, got a taste of power using Arakshan politics and now everybody is fighting to outdo others in Jai Bheem posturing. Congress is awwal number ke kaminey isme.

Fire has been lit, irreversible change set in motion. Only goes one way from here if history is an indicator.

Nothing wrong with that, it was the public sentiment of that time as well. Politics has changed since the 80s. One can't be all idealistic and say we will remove all reservations. In fact Congress got 99 sets because they ran a fake campaign that BJP will remove reservations and change the constitution  with 4 sau paar. All parties do aarakshan rajneeti. Nehru had other flaws , but not this one.

Easy for NRIs to say bro... Things are bound to get worse for GC's in the country.

I think most of the talent will soon leave the nation for better opportunities abroad if it hasn't already.

This country is cooked.

Caste was being asked even in earlier census, but it was for Govt use to distribute funds etc for certain communities. Only SC/STs were documented and rest all were marked General. That data was used by govt and not made public.  Now, it has been made mandatoty to ask for caste and that data will be made public.. It all depends on how Govt sets policies using that data. If they do what RaGa and his system wants, India will be doomed!! Hope better sense prevails.

"Colonial ruler Britain began an Indian census in 1872 and counted all castes until 1931. However, independent India since 1951 only counted Dalits and Adivasis, who are referred to as scheduled castes and tribes, respectively. Everyone else's caste was marked as general"

Nothing to do with NRIs. I agree about the status of GC in India, and it is a sad reality of Caste politics. BC, ek doosre se bhari padh raheinhain ...  jaati jaati karne mein!!.
