Shubhman Gill India test captain for Eng series?

KL Rahul is worse as captain. I don't think Gill was great but he had no help from his ace bowler.

Siraj and Prasidh got more bowling due to his IPL connection.Jadeja was horrible.

I don't think he is going to get help from anyone else in next test either. Akash deep , Arshdeep and Harshit are not exactly going to win any matches either.

Got the highest score by an Indian captain. Broke so many records in this match alone. Overall captaincy will improve with time.

Still don't like making the best batter/superstar as captain. They should select captain based on whoever has the best leadership skills. As an example I would've moved to Rahane as the Test captain in 2017, and would've gone with Iyer as captain in place of Gill. Captaincy and batting are 2 different things and this sub-continental fetish of making the best batter or most senior player captain is moronic.

Should have been Bumrah, Gill could have VC and taking over duties when Bumrah not playing.

Average 35 after 32 tests. Away average 17.

Imagine making Shiv Sunder Das our captain in 2000s.

Such a poor choice for captaincy. Gill hasn't done anything in his career to warrant captaincy. His best performance is still the Gabba innings he played 5 years ago. In fact he has regressed and is a sitting duck outside of India. I would rather make someone like Iyer captain. At least Iyer has shown improvement and has leadership skills. He knows how to bring the team along.

@Suhaan, change the OP to Gills correct first name - Shubman and not Shubham. Maybe you confused the first name with Shubham Dubey.

Abhishek Sharma is his so called BFF, and Punjab team mate. But we saw what Gill did in that Zim T20 series after Abhishek's 40 ball 100.

Already in his short career has shown traits of jealousy, insecurity.

Unfortunately in India, bowlers, even Bumrah are the untouchables, no reservation or security of place as well, 'horses for courses' only applied to bowlers. That is why you see mediocrities like KL and Gill rewarded with captaincy stints, and all the endorsements as well, someone like KL has bigger brand value than Bumrah.

I'll take KL as captain over Gill. We may be frustrated by his underachievement but he is a nice guy, patient/calm, no agenda or insecurity....also selfless who will play any role for team's benefit. He at least has some traits to be given leadership role.

Secondary skill bhi hai, test quality keeper. And despite his poor stats has proved that he can score in tough conditions.

Preference order should be Bumrah, Pant, then KL.

Kl as captain over gill. Will you stick by it? :hysterical:

Gill did well with the bat. But tactically looks very passive. Even today he kept the field spread even on last ball and Atkinson took easy singles

Didn't panic which was the most imp thing. He carries himself like a captain of the Indian team. Tactics and field placings will come.

Yes already an improvement on Rohit

There were some questionable on field calls. End doesn't really justify the means. He was appreciated for right reasons. There was one incident where we changed ball needlessly.  Today didn't make the same mistake. That is what we see. No errors should be repeated.

Posting after 6 years....looking forward to Gill taking India to new levels. i have faith in him. time, confidence of runs, respect of teammates will make him better captain in coming years. Still believe he will score 300 plus one day for India in tests. .

As if you have never been wrong about some cricket opinion before. All concerns were valid at that time.

Btw KL has 1-1 record as captain, that too in RSA. No reason he couldn't have done the same here.

His field settings are bit more proactive right or wrong. That placing of Sai Sudarshan at fine right behind slips was a solid move. Hope he starts doing it very soon going forward if needed.

No problem in being wrong, just in going overboard in spinning narratives around it and then pretending everything is dandy after you get proven wrong instead of fessing up.

I probably got a little ahead of myself yday evening after celebrating the win. Apologise if it comes across as confrontational.

I did admit I got it wrong about Gill (and Siraj, against whom I have used harsher words in the past) in one of the match threads or some other thread. Can't keep track of all threads where I have commented. Pretty sure this isn't the only one, I have definitely made hundreds of contradictory and dumb posts if you dig up older threads. That is how it goes in forums like this where we are sharing our opinions, often when we can't be objective due to passions, emotions.
