Does Shubman Gill averaging only 35 in test deserves captaincy?

The batting avgs will go down as batsman play more t20s.Pitches helping bowlers more and more is also a factor for lower batting averages. Far cry from 1980s-2000s when there were pitches in most countries that were flat which would help batsmen make merry to offset lively pitches.

Now we see result in almost every test match. India will play more and more in SENA will also contribute to lower averages.

Dravid played 4 series in Australia in 16 years. Sachin played 5 series in 20 plus years. Gill has already played 2 Series in 5 years.

Don't know why Gill has been made captain though. He is still not a certainity in playing XI.

Is test cricket captaincy easy though compared to T20s?? India's two most successful test players of the past decade say it so

In Tests it is a lot more structured. You don't need to think on the feet all the time as you expect the opposition to play in a certain way. With new aggressive players coming through captains are running out of ideas very soon.  At the end of the day bowlers and captains have to be in sync. YOou work out the field set and as long as the bowlers bowl to the field you are going to be good. In Tests leadership is also needed not just captaincy. When team goes through a period of no wicket you have to keep the players motivated. Also things like  how he makes sure bowlers don't suffer a burn out are important in Tests.  Players should be able to take the heat.  Player should first and foremost love playing Tests. Rahane i thought did an exceptional job at the MCG with his bowling rotation back in 2021.

Yes, Gill is a bad choice. If he suddenly finds form, and does well, then there will be no problem. But if he continues to be inconsistent, then the real problem of insecurity creeps in. Test captaincy should have been given to Bumrah, especially when Bumrah was interested. Pant should have been VC. If sudarshan and Jaiswal does really well, he may not even deserve a chance in XI. Probably Karun at 3, Iyer at 4 would have been better choice.

What is interesting is what is the motive for selection of Gill over others especially when Bumrah staked his claim.  He has no captaincy pedigree to speak of. Only reason could be he allows the coach to rule without questioning? It looks like Nehra has complete control of team selection in GT, and gill simply is a "yes" boy.
I would have made Bumrah an interirm captain and Pant or KL VC. Waited for Gill few more series before he is handed over captaincy.

Apart from anything else, anyone can see Gill still has glaring technical issues that the IPL jamboree can mask but cannot hide. After playing in the side for so long he still plays with crossed legs across his pads and will be a sitting duck on any non patta track against any international quality attack - that is why he averages 35 after all. He hasn't fixed the fundamental issues so cannot expect the outcome to be any diffferent. He may have a more torrid time than Kohli did on some of his tours of England

Shreyas Iyer deserved the captaincy and as usuals morons in BCCI and jokers in selection committee had other ideas and selected softie Gill with no leadership or performing under pressure credentials

Mixing formats. Iyer was being bounced out by an ageing James Anderson last time and had clear issues against short pitched bowling. He will have to make his way into the test team before he can think of leadership. Gill similarly has issues. He has clear technical faults as well yet giving him the captaincy ( in which role he is untested) has ensured he gets a permanent slot. This experiment may not end well and could unravel after this series. The saving grace for him could be that this year conditions are more batting friendly than usual in England in June.

We have KL Rahul with his stinking avg of 33 not only captained India but has been playing over a decade after doing nothing.

Gill is an upgrade over this bozo Rahul.

The general average posted in the OP can be misleading as in matches involving Gill, only Pant and Jaiswal would likely average higher.

Back in the day, in movies, they'd say to give responsibility to the unfocused hero by getting him married, and he will magically come good in life.

Long way to go ffor Gill yet , let us hope he ends up being great as captain.
