Gollum Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 Shift in position helped him. Opening is the toughest job in cricket, period. That is why very few 50+ averaging batsmen there. Even though this was a patta, new ball was tough to negotiate especially on day 1 morning, that is why Jaiswal's 89 was worth much more. #3 is also tougher than #4. Highest averaging batsmen in history have usually been #4. New guy, Lord, Forever Indian and 1 other 1 3
crictime Posted July 7, 2025 Author Posted July 7, 2025 Yes, @vvvslaxman put this point forward yesterday. Perhaps he is suited outside top 3. Manucrick 1

KL being a foil to Jaiswal as opener is also better than Rohit being there express bowling 1
putrevus Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 (edited) He was lucky he was in the team in first place let alone be captain. He has done very well in two tests.Good for him.He was there stinking in Australia and against NZ too. Edited July 7, 2025 by putrevus

It does not mean much when team gets swept plus he did not play first test or his avg would have been lot less. I am not knocking him but let us pump brakes on how well was doing coming into this series.

Gill was the second highest run getter for INdia against England in India. PUlled off a tricky chase along with Jurel. That was the first sign of him trying to work on his test match batting.

prudent_kreeda Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 Gill is not ATG at this point to expect Joe root , Smith kind of performance every time he bats. Gill carried his weakness of his play against spin and against swing bit too long -atleast thought he will iron out his play against spin quickly but perhaps did not figure it out or not worked on it hard . Only since 2024 season he has shown ability to stick and score runs in spin pitches. In this tour has improved his batting technique (slightly shorter & straighter bat swing , very straight bat while defending, Play close to body while playing balls on the sumps to get single ) but weakness against movement still persists ( Anyway this a huge problem with all younger players in every team not just limited to Gill) . In moving conditions one needs to leave lot of balls and have good front foot drives as you get lot of balls pitched up. He has to have a plan to stick longer (improve defence further against in coming balls & curb certain shots ) , he has very good front foot drives down the ground , cover drives . -So runs will come if he stays longer. Only KL looked better at handling moving deliveries in this series. He has started getting 1000+ runs in 2024 & 2025 . looks like he is capable of getting such scores in a year for some more years.
pkmmamks Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 Why not. Koi rule to hai nahi aisa ki average is se upar honi chahiye
