Time to address the 4th innings modest chases, BCCI would you listen?

BCCI can't do much.

The team management have to first pick up the right team and a sustainable template for test cricket.

Too many allrounders are not right fit for test cricket.

This era top teams- Australia and South Africa, both play with the same combination.

SA - 7 batsman ( including Mulder) + Jansen + 3 bowlers
Aus - 7 batsman ( including Webster) + Cummins + 3 bowlers.

In contrast- we have been too obsessed with the three allrounders. Two is still okay but three is an overkill.
If you lose three quick wicket, its Pant at No. 5 and with his high risk approach on a 5th day pitch, its game over.

My only wish - play 6 proper batsman overseas. Non negoitable. Then fill the rest.

Wrong. Markram saved his wicket in an extremely tough passage of play with the new ball, and kept focus throughout. India would have been reduced to 30/4 with the new ball movement and pressure.

He had a low back lift. He didn't play with angle. He stood up tall and met with center of bat. I am not sure Indians have that technique. He played even tougher knock against India on a lively track in that 55 all out match

Over my dead body approach is not natural thing for our players. In terms of holding nerve and also playing shots even from the yester era Laxman was pretty good besides Dravid. In a chase you have to sense the vibe of opposition and react accordingly.  The vibe among England was they knew it was make or break for the first 25 overs. So they threw everything at us in that passage of play. India's goal should have been to negotiate that phase with as minimum damage as possible. This should have been the communication sent out to our batsmen.

"Play your natural game" bull **** works when there is no pressure. But in these situations you should be prepared to go against grain. ABDV has done it many times. Played opposite of how he would play normally.

Yeah that Cape Town 100 was an ATG one.

It was so obvious that it'll be easy once ball is old and you can score runs. Not seeing that and going for aggresive strategy by coach is sackable offense

THE ULTIMATE TRUTH

These fellows have some serious mental issues. They badly need sports psychologists. Just look at the World Cup final in your own backyard: timid and frightened. Only Pant, Bumrah, or Jaiswal look Australian in this team. The rest are sheeps. Nitish Reddy looks like a tailender with the bat—subdued and terrified.

Many of them simply lack the mental toughness required for competitive sports. No shortage of talent, but psychological issues. Just facts.

In the 4th inning, Gill scored a boundary on his 4th ball. (From Carse). That boundary eased his nerves. If u watch his facial expression, he wasn't looking nervous at all. (He had tons of runs under his belt in the first 2 tests. So no reason to be nervous)   But the very next ball, he got LBW plumb while playing a defensive shot (that looked like a text book shot & not a rash shot).  It was a straight ball that pitched on off stump & straightened further.  Gill was probably looking for a bit of an outswing but the ball kept going straight, hitting the middle stump.  Clearly, there is no mental angle in all this.  It's all technical issue or maybe poor anticipation by the batsman.

Home and away. Just last year we messed 2 easy chases in Hyderabad and Mumbai. Even Ranchi we had to huff and puff to a 190 target on an extremely slow black soil turner, credit to Jurel there.

@Lone Wolf @Lord, if not for Jaiswal and to a lesser extent Rohit, we would have failed to chase 80 in Cape Town last year. Remember we lost our last 6 wickets for no run in 1st innings, 155/4 became 155 all out. Imagine Jaiswal getting dismissed for 0 there, on that crazy pitch 80 was like a 200 on normal pitch.

Jaiswal took on Rabada, Burger right from the start for his quickfire 30, reminded me of some of Viru's starts in 2011 WC (esp. against Gul), albeit different format. He probably had a similar thought process here but wasn't needed, especially against Archer who has a very good record against LHBs (here also he dismissed Jaiswal, Pant, Washi).

I mean his execution was all wrong.  He should have had a sighter first up of Archer and then go after him.

Or rather even Woakes after seeing of Archer.

Yup, deserves a stern scolding for that.

Different conditions require different approaches. Here everyone knew batting will be easy after 25 overs and we can make up runs there.

I'm not blaming Jaiswal. It has to come from the coach. Maybe Jaiswal could have picked a better ball, hes not good with short ball anyway. But thats about it.

I mean we've been over this like a million times - *ing RGS stepping out to Mad Max in the last over of the world cup PP killed the game for us! Most Indians (top cricketers) simply don't have the patience to grind it out over long periods of time, tbf no one does consistently except Oz :om:

Be it 100 overs of an ODI or 5 days of a test, IPL has really killed the traditional Indian cricketer whether we like it or not :whack2:

I think high time INdia should be flexible with batting order in 4th innings. Pollock was sent up in the chase against India. He disrupted us and game became easy for SA.

It's the approach, it is too timid

We need to almost take the pitch out of the equation by going for it, not gung go, but certainly being aggressive

In Cape town Jaiswal and Rohit started aggressively chasing a much smaller target, if course it was different but the approach was right. Jaiswal hit almost run a ball 20 odd. That would have won us the match yesterday.

Unfortunately if we get out playing a aggressive shot our batsmen will get killed by team management and our media, this is where England mentality is much more evolved. We are lagging behind, as we did in T20is for far too long

Yes this is exactly the approach we need. Aggressive.

Doesn't apply to this chase. It was always going to be difficult with the new ball but much easier later.
