That 774 was not against best WI bowlers of 71  series. Look at names of 71 WI team. Even in  78-79  series score above 700+ was against depleted  2nd string post packer saga in India.

Many people don't understand this. But all said and done it was still a mighty effort given the next best was not even close.

Sunil Gavaskar gets lot of publicity for socred 14 hundreds against WI.But in reality he faced mighty WI attacks in 1983 for 11 tests.

He did score three 100s all of them coming draws. One in WI and 2 in India with  one of them coming to bat at 0/2 and scoring his highest score 236 in Chennai.

He also statpadded in Aus against Packer rejects led by 42 yo Simpson. His record against Aus first XI is average.

Our famous spin trio also boosted their numbers in that period, all came crashing down once WSC got over.

They are all great players, Sunny is still an ATG, but have to put this point across for those who don't know the impact of WSC on international cricket.

Even Karnataka defeated that West Indies side of 1979 in the tour game.

Because these guys stayed away. Malcolm Marshall though made his debut in that 78-79 series.

ya. Zaheer Abbas really tore them apart from  Chandra who zaheer himself had no clue about. Chandra is an exception though. Many batsmen had no clue about him.

Marshal was 19 then and was in and out of the side till 1981.

Marshal did not become Marshal till 1983 against India in 1983 before world cup and in the return series in India Marshall became the leader of their attack.

That WI side in 1979 was weakened a lot due Packer series.Still they only lost one test in India.

Finishes the series with 754 - 20 short of the Indian record. Could have easily got 800+ with the start he had but still one of the ATG series performances to remember.

He was playing well in the first innings. Stupidly ran himself out. This is why when you are in form don't give your wicket away stupidly. Next innings you might get a half decent ball you will be looking at 2 bad innings in a row.

He'll never get a chance like this again. But what a series for a debut captain! He'll not have to worry about getting his teammates' respect after this

Sunny G deserves that record. We won that series, our first real big series win overseas (late 60s NZ was minnow level), landmark achievement for Indian cricket.

Series wins in WI and Eng in the same year (71). Also the war against Pak. Special year.
