Sachin came into the team before Dravid and VVS and was there after they retired also. Was Sachin good fielder answer is yes in his initial years but as he aged he became a liability too. That is why Dhoni started playing two out of three in 2008 CB series . He was not better than Azhar ,Dravid or even VVS in slips.Azhar was a fantastic fielder and close in catcher. Examples of Sachin being a liability in the field? As far as I remember he was always safe and quick fielder till the day he retired. Manucrick and GoldenSun 2

Sehwag took a diving catch to prove him wrong. Dhoni had all these weird rules for other seniors, never shied away from using his power to target people who he felt threatened by. But never applied those to himself, sucked the life out of Indian cricket way past his expiry date, first took our test team to historic lows and then piggybanked on others to play till 2019 WC. If not for covid he would have played 2020 WT20 as well. Selfish and utterly despicable character. Manucrick, bouncers, rollingstoned and 7 others 1 9

Laaloo Posted August 28, 2025 Posted August 28, 2025 I think he dropped Symonds in 2008 perth test. But that's the only drop I ever remember. Sounds crazy.

I think he was in slips because he couldn't run as fast as Sachin and also had a weak throw Gollum, Manucrick and New guy 3

I can forgive him for everything he dropped but not the mccullum dolly drop in the second test in wellington. We would have won that test and tied the series. 2014 had 3 heartbreaks. One was this test and the other 2 were 1) Adelaide chasing 360 odd ( why Saha why did you have to step out and hit a 6 against lyon when you had hit one few balls back) 2) that SAF Jo Burg test where we nearly failed to defend 450..Even in the first test against NZ it was so crazy we got nz out for 100 odd in second innings and nearly chased 406. We fell short by 40 runs. Rahane was given a very pathetic LBW decision. It was prime Rahane 80.1 and what a beauty first ball. What a perfect ball. That has swung, but oh - hold on - Rahane has hit this one. What a time for a rough call. The game could change because if this. A lovely inswinger first of all. Starts around off, comes back in, hits him plumb in front, except that Rahane has hit it. Oh what drama at Eden Park. Dravid, Laxman weren't as good in the deep but you could place Sachin everywhere, he was more versatile. Azhar was great, but can't trust such a guy. I don't think he was safe catcher in slips, he was okay in outfield nothing specatcular.

vvvslaxman Posted August 28, 2025 Posted August 28, 2025 Most of the bad catchers in the past era were bowlers. OUr batsmen were not mediocre. Probably here and there they might have dropped. But nothing concerning. Worst of all in the 2000s was Parthiv patel. That dude is something

Thought the torture was over post 2004 Sydney. But he came back to haunt us in 2016 Eng home series (Saha dislocated his shoulder in Rajkot) and 2017-18 RSA. He was something else, would consistently drop multiple dollies per innings, there can never be another keeper remotely as bad as him. Our bowlers would get demoralized just at the sight of him behind the stumps. And such an overrated batsman, 25 tests, 40 ODIs and not one 100, 20 averaging guy....even Bharat never irritated me as much as the OG Pappu. zen Posted August 29, 2025 Posted August 29, 2025 In the 80s-90s-20s, a good fielder rarely dropped catches within his zone. The issue was they hardly made an extraordinary effort to convert half chances. They were like buckets that almost grabbed whatever came to them. Usually, the drops were seen at gully, slips, and in the wicket keeping area where the reaction time is relatively less. Also teams such as Aus and SA (Rhodes) of that era appeared to be in a league of their own as fielding units - catching esp. in terms of going for half chances and direct hits. tapandrun 1
vvvslaxman Posted August 29, 2025 Posted August 29, 2025 One has to consider he is not a tall guy so his reach is somewhat limited. He has to make up for it with speed which he never lacked.
