Thing is beating a side like Australia in a KO takes a huge emotional toll on the players, and they may not recover in 2-3 days gap before the final. Think this is what happened to us in 2017 WC, and to RSA in last T20 WC where they stunned Aus in SF and lost tamely to Kiwis in the final.

Saw it happening a lot in tennis in Big 3 era Often some guy like Tsonga, Berdych, Soderling would beat a Big 3 player and then not turn up in the next match.

What I said a week earlier, that is my biggest concern for the final.

Players were emotional wrecks post match, they will be floating on air for next couple of days. Don't doubt their ability, just the mental recovery after such a high, for many of these players who weren't around in 2017, this must be the greatest day of their careers, taking down a behemoth.

SA 's choking genes can never be discounted though.

I'd be double nervous facing England here.

In such a long event, dropping a couple of games in group stage is good. Not just keeps the team grounded, but also forces them to explore plan B, C etc.

Indians in 23 WC, Aussie ladies here, victims of their own excellence/dominance, and once they were challenged by fearless, quality opponents, lost the plot.

I don't always agree with @deathmonger's predictions (though I respect him and his posts), but on days like this start being optimistic like him.

Us winning a hockey WC or Olympic gold will be the happiest day of my life as a sports fan. Been a long time, almost 5 decades. Sporting victories like this give us so much happiness, optimism, inspiration....make us think that anything is possible.

What about qualifying for soccer wc..winning it is impossible but seeing India in soccer wc ..would be awesome

Inshallah, Mashallah, Praise be to Allah, things like that are normal phrases in India when accepting awards or some honour. Nobody would bat an eyelid, especially after such a joyful victory.

Sporting prowess is not linear. It is exponential.

For most of independence we were a dirt poor country. Only after economic reforms we are somewhat richer (still poor).

India was actually poorer than sub saharan Africa till 2015.

By 2040 we will be solid upper middle income.

Like you said with Alana King, genetics has nothing to do with it.

Hockey WC/Olympic Gold is coming by 2050. As is women's cricket world cups (both formats) and Olympic Gold.

Indian women are dominating U-19 cricket as well.

Another thing I am tracking is women's wrestling. Indian women are really doing well at junior levels vs Japanese (who are the gold standard). In a decade's time a couple of golds in the Olympics by Indian women will be commonplace in wrestling.

Again I am not saying we will start doing well in swimming or football etc where the base is not that strong. But in sports like cricket, hockey, wrestling, shooting etc we already have a solid base. Next 15-20 years we will just build on that.

Not a big football fan. Will be awesome but I am not emotionally invested in it.

2 Olympic gold medals in cricket up for grabs from 28. Invest heavily in women's cricket, make Olympics as big a priority as ICC events.

Historically, 4 gold medals almost always secures a top 20 finish for a country, that is a realistic target for India in next 10-15 years. We finished 48th in Tokyo with 1 G, 2 S, 4 B.

2 in cricket

1 in hockey (Ind W in hockey are a bit way off the top tier but still should improve with HPL/economic development etc but not gold medal contenders)

A few in shooting

Compound archery (LA has only one event but hopefully more events in the future)

Wrestling (mostly women's)

These are our best chances.

Maybe some guy/girl comes up in athletics like Chopra in field events, who knows.

Wrestling federation is useless, we have lots of potential there even in men's categories.
