This is the first time a total of 300+ has EVER been chased in a world cup knockout, including men AND women, in the entire history of cricket. You can also include Champions trophy and its true even then too. A total of 250+ has been chased ONCE in CT and world cup final in the entire history of ODIs

Why is India expected to do something which no other team ever did?

Thing is we didn't even fight in any of those 300+ chases, all were massacres. NZ lost the 23 SF against us, but gave us a scare till Shami turned the game around. We never did that once.

Anyway 300 is a technicality. NZ's target in 2015 SF was 299 in 43 overs, which they chased down, against Steyn, Morkel, Philander, Tahir.

Anyway here we are praising our women for doing something which our men never came close to doing.

Both by India

That's because at that time nobody knows what kind of approach to take to chase a huge score like that. Now most of the top teams are very methodical while chasing such scores and this knowledge is passed onto women's teams as well.

That Jo'burg 434 match was a watershed moment of sorts in chasing big totals

Yeah but our strike bowling succumbed to the sight of beasts Gilly and Hayden walking in

They set the tone and we never recovered

Zaheer and old Srinath lost the plot from 1st over, relentless Gilchrist pounced on it

This I completely agree to - Zaheer looked like he was hung over from the prev night in the first over. 5 wides was a ball bowled a yard or more off of leg stump. Gilchrist could not do anthing as it was that wide.

And supposedly Zaheer was nervous.... what about Srinath as he had been playing 10 years? Srinath was just as bad. They should have had Kumble instead of Dinesh Mongia on that wicket.

Srinath had eco of 9 and Zaheer close to 8

Srinath being so experienced should have bowled more wily but he looked just as nervous as Zaheer.

Yes - At least make a respectable effort.

Even the 1975 world cup - although it was 60 overs then - WI had set a total of 291 vs Aus. Aus got 274 with 8 balls to spare and 5 run outs - Alan Turner, Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Walker and last wkt Thomson.

yes bowlers lost that not batsmen

But the batsmen showed no fight either - Folded for 234.

As FIrdoose Moonda says India's fielding was worse than Australia's conceded 22 extra runs through fielding and dropped a couple of catches. This is to those who dilute India's performance citing those drops.

Mumbai should host all major finals. They can build a 300k seater in Lucknow, Guwahati whatever...nothing comes close to spirit of the Mumbai fans

You will not say that if you have attended a match at Eden Gardens.

The first 300 score we chased I remember was during the Independence cup against Pakistan where Hrishikesh Kanitkar scored the winning runs. We chased around 314 runs and it was a wonder how they chased such a huge total at that time.

Hah now this is a fond memory and probably Kanitkars most impressive achievement in his life hitting that boundary off the last ball.

Those days bilaterals counted almost as much as any world Cup match. Why natwest final is also special.

Atleast Kanitkar did that in Bangladesh. But  Rajesh Chauhan did that in Karachi. After his winning six against saqlain whole stadium went silent.

Robin won us a match single handedly chasing against Zim

When it comes to ice-cool temperament, Robin Singh is one of the OG.  One particular match I remember was the 1999 World Cup match against Australia at the Oval.  India's top order was blown away by McGrath for 17/4  in 6 overs. India lost Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly, and Azharuddin in 6 overs while chasing 282. Then Ajay Jadeja and Robin Singh, two of the ice-cold ODI players of that time, added 141 runs in 30 overs.   Jadeja made 100. Robin Singh made 75.  Everyone else made single digits.
