Gautam Gambhir: I don't really believe in data. I feel data is overrated

This is 2026, don't expect such dismissive thoughts about data analytics.

USA's sporting dominance is purely because of how they reduce sports to an exact science. In a sport like baseball, everything is data driven, llike where to pitch, batting order, no gut instinct stuff.

Not really. It has worked against India. Every half-decent off spinner has troubled our lefties at the top. And when we brought in a right-hander at the top in Samson to counter the tactic, it worked! I would say that would mean the matchup theory did indeed work against us and we had to counter it with Samson.

it will work at times it wont
Point is - a good bowler will be good no matter who he is against. And a good batter good.
What happened to Akeal vs Samson? Axar vs RHBs? What happened to Sikander Raza vs SA?
Ever seen any one using match up nonsese while greats like Murali Warne were bowling? Moeen ali vs India in tests...What happened to LHB Abhishek vs AKeal?

wo sab chorh Offspinners have been consistenly awesome in this world cup, not just against India but against ALL TEAMS INCLUDING RHBS. Will jacks the part timer included. You cannot pick an ordinary player above a good player "jus cuz matchups" bruh!

Windies also paid a price yesterday for clinging on matchup nonsese. Chase should have bowled the first or second over but coz of SAMSON match-up  they didnot bring him on. And what, he had to bowl with a bar soap with dew later on and paid price

Sports science and data are 2 diff things, data analysis is v.small part of sports science.

As cricket is also moving to back room driven sports it will also be more data driven. At intnl level/IPL every team makes use of data.

Right now data analysts are not cricketers themselves or have not played cricket much , so they are just providing numbers rather than info. it will be become useful if these analyst start putting these in terms of how to win/improve , or may be if some ex-players becomes data analysts it will make more sense to them.

Data has to be described in cricketing terms.

And right now there are only 5-6 serious cricketing teams, most of the data and the analysis is just redundant

If Data is over-rated why did Washington sundar play against SA instead of Axar? That was sure based on data.

and how did it turn out? did not even complete the quota of overs and saved by bowling just 2 overs

It's one thing to use your gut-feel or certain anecdotal evidence to complement data, but to say that you don't "believe" in data is idiotic. This statement is something I would expect to come from padosiland instead of our coach. Data is irrefutable and all fact-based. I can understand analyzing data to help with decision-making but to totally ignore data and analytics is laughable.

I really hope we move away from Gambhir after this tourney and also from SKY as captain. Get in a new coach and captain (Iyer) and get in players like Jaiswal, Parag, Raghuvanshi, Vipraj etc. in the mix.

Spare Jaiswal off this all format nonsense

Data is dynamic, it changes with every ball.

The less experienced you are, the more reliance on data. The more experienced you are, data mostly supports what your plan says.

Also the ability to execute is a different matter. “Data” could tell you to bowl a yorker at a particular batsman or in a particular situation, execution could end up with the bowler bowling a full toss.

So as a coach, you have to balance multiple aspects by reading the game constantly.

If you rely heavily on “data”, you risk turning into a programmed robot yourself.

Whenever we win, GG turns up for PC @Lord @Lone Wolf @New guy @putrevus

Haar gaye toh kisi aur ko bali ka bakra bana deta hai, like Doeschate after the RSA game.

Dravid was ulta, would face the press every time we lost, and send someone else when we won. He was brave enough to front up after Nov 19, that shows character. Something this farzi deshbhakt lacks.

See in IMO head coach can do pregame press conf if he wants but post game conf has to be done only after they win whole thing or a loss.

Jaiswal deserves to be in the team based on his performances. He would be in any other team with the stats he has. He's one of the best IPL openers and his T20I record is average of 36 with a SR of 160+! That's outstanding which makes him an elite T20 opener.

Quality always wins in the end but it always helps to look at analytics to see your opponents' strengths, weaknesses, their go to areas, things they struggle against etc. It may not guarantee success but it increases the likelihood of doing so.

Nakko brother, let Jaiswal be our elite redball batsman

T20s will snatch our potential red ball great,he will certainly come into odi squad

India should follow the specialist sides doctrine from now onwards atbest with 1/2/3 players overlapping atleast 2 of the formats,no one player should be allowed to play all the formats

Don't delude yourself(us here) ,that we will have another Kohli level suppasta who played all formats, but he too lost it since 2020,had he left one of the formats he could have certainly arrested his test slide

Kohli was the last superstar, don't see another superstar like him,not putting him onto pedestal but taking current era and gen into account
