Interesting. So India had no non-veg restriction before that? A lot of our own history has been concealed or forgotten. There are weapons held by fighters a millenia or two ago which can't even be lifted by current humans.

India has never been a  vegetarian only country.  Vivekananda busted it long back.

And even if India was mostly vegetarian in Sage Veda Vyaasa times, it doesn't automatically justify it for today's situation.

Sometimes we overdo the "our ancestors were always right" paradigm with little regard for how much knowledge/understanding has grown and evolved in 3000 yrs

There was an episode from Mahabharata series in the late 80s where Krishna stays at Vidur's place and eats "humble" saag in their house instead of eating Duryodan's hearty meal. I guess the only difference was affordability of meat.

Vegans like this dude are killing the planet with whiny fear tactics to clutch onto gullible people's heart strings. One of the most meat consuming states in India is Kerala. I don't see any loss of vegetation or climate change in Kerala. They are infact a tourist destination to beat the heat for many Indians. Kuch bhi :eviltongue:

I am a vegetarian now, just that I consume eggs and fish oil pills.

Eggs are largely considered vegetarian in the Western world. It is similar to milk, an animal by-product. It never had life and never will, since commercial eggs are unfertilized.

Dil behlane ko ghalib....

While in reality, chicken endure a lot of suffering for laying eggs as well as obviously for during slaughter

Quote

Battery cages

On egg farms, layer hens are confined to small cages that can be stacked on top of one another to mimic the form of an artillery battery, hence the name. Each cage houses a handful of hens, and each bird is given an amount of space that is not much larger than their bodies. The United Egg Producers recommend an area of up to 86 square inches per bird, which is not even enough space to allow hens to stretch out their wings.

Crowded sheds

Poultry production barns tend to keep birds within vast, indoor spaces, often without any access to the outdoors or even windows to let in natural light. Broiler barns and turkey farms can accommodate thousands of birds at a time. High stocking densities can prevent birds from getting proper exercise or rest and lead to dangerously unsanitary living conditions.

Mutilation

Chickens, geese, ducks, and other poultry birds are subjected to mutilations throughout their lives. Chickens and turkeys are often debeaked and lose portions of their beaks so they don’t peck other birds. But the procedure is only necessary because this pecking behavior is exacerbated due to the stress of intense confinement. In egg production, male chicks, who are useless to the industry since they cannot produce eggs, are killed often within hours of hatching, either by suffocation or grinding.

Inhumane transportation

At the end of poultry birds’ life—which often comes years earlier than it would in the wild—they are loaded onto trucks for transportation to the slaughterhouse. Birds are handled with little care when they are collected from barns and stuffed into cages on trucks. Many suffer broken bones in the process. Many chickens end up dying during transport, for lack of food or water, or exposure to extreme weather.

HOW ARE POULTRY KILLED?

Birds are not covered by the two pieces of federal legislation meant to protect certain animals from unnecessary harm, the Humane Slaughter Act nor the Animal Welfare Act. Because of this, birds are often exposed to some of the most painful killing methods commonly used by the industrial agriculture industry.

By far the most inhumane slaughter method is known as live-shackle slaughter, in which birds are hung upside down and electrocuted. If a bird survives the electrocution—and every year hundreds of thousands do—they remain conscious as their throats are slit, and even after, as they are thrown into a vat of scalding water.

North India happens to have a fantastic veg cuisine, which people from world over should look at, to turn to vegetarianism, and better still, to veganism.

That's pretty obvious.

My point is that eggs are no different from milk, where the cow suffers through artificial insemination, new born separation, male calf killing etc. But our society glorifies milk and vilifies egg. In the Western world, both milk and eggs are considered vegetarian because they are both animal byproducts.

As much as I like Acharya and admire his intellect, he is no different from your fav Chinese professor. Be very careful with what he says. Especially when it comes to women and family. Very dangerous guy for Gen Z who are his core audience.

What does he say about women and family? That video of his I found him giving negative talk about how world will be doomed with the suggestion that veganism is the solution. He doesn't show the reality of a vegan diet. It won't be apparent for a person who has switched to veganism initially. The effects are noticeable a few years down the line. Sincere vegans look malnourished some dead. We have went through historical famines under the british rule.

We don't want a soft empire rule of veganism. Veganism is a western concept. The sh1t thing is it "aligns" with the ahimsa concept of India. Ahimsa doesn't mean malnutrition which feeds with self denial and loss of ego. Ahimsa is not possible in any society as every lifeform that is not plants in Earth eats another living thing. Only those who want to achieve moksha need to practice Ahimsa not everyone in soceity.

Not all vegan choices are about Ahimsa. That's superficial. I do agree that diet itself shouldnt become a religious choice. But I also don't want to close the window on importance of diet and what role it can play depending on what one wants to pursue. I also don't want to make it ideological to study how ones diet may make them feel. This is not just restricted to meat. This could be tea, coffee, alcohol etc. This is pursuit that makes us human beings.

On Acharya, I always get worried with him. 1) He is very intelligent and eloquent. 2) He has academic credentials which matters in India 3) He can be convincing on both Advaita and why women shouldn't have children. It's way more dangerous than feministic pursuit. He can combine Dharma and convince not to build families. Most of our modern life degradation can be directly linked to exclusivity and moving away from family and community.

He is instigating or fueling a gender war that is in the underbelly. Think of south korea right now where men and women don't even want to interact and have opposing views on politics. Each group feels victimized and blames the other. I'm coming to the notion that too much independence is also not good in the long run.
