India squads Vs Afghanistan

If 7 players are selected from a single IPL team , whose captain is also captain of national team, also captain of state team,

Question would be asked.

One player, who every one think is capable of playing for both test and odi ,but is not able to get a single game for his IPL team .

Performances in A teams is usually taken as a pre-cursor to selection in tests and ODIs.

In Unofficial Tests Vs Australia A  a few months back, Gurnoor had picked 8 wickets from 2 matches ( just 3 innings ) and averaged 25.5. He was the highest wicket taker for the series among both teams along with Suthar. ( another bowler whose selection is being questioned ).

Don't understand how Gurnoor's selection is being questioned in tests.

I can understand if one questions Gurnoor's ODI selection. I myself would have preferred Ashok Sharma who may not have played for India A yet but is a 150 k pacer with great wicket taking ability in List A.

@Mosher, @Suhaan, @singhvivek141, @Lone Wolf, @tapandrun, @Sandz, @MK55, @rollingstoned, @Need4Speed @Vk1 , @speedster@vishalvirsingh, @govinda, @bouncers

This idiocy is exactly what I anticipated from these buffoons - using IPL performances as a benchmark.

Ashok should have been in the ODI - no exceptions. In fact if he was born in any other county, he would have been in the side.

8 wickets here and there is nothing. Kotian picked 8 wickets in the SA A test. Why was he omitted? It is not like he ran through a team. Mukesh did better in Australia A tour than this. Took 6 for 46 . Not that i like him. These stats have to be viewed with context. You have to play Irani Trophy and do well there. Ansul kamboj did better than Brar in the IRani trophy final.

You know the concept of dead wicket right?? There was virtually nothing in it for Pacers in those games  and he impressed selectors and fast bowling experts alike.  Must have seen him in NCA as well.  And as per Harsha Bhogle he is being called next best red ball bowler within Indian circles in recent few months.

Kotian's omission might be unfair as Sundar was picked.

Anshul Kamboj will forever be remembered for bowling in 120kph on debut and having an embarassing debut and made a mockery of Indian domestic structure.

Mukesh got picked for India played multiple tests and didn't do well.

Not 7 but 8 players should have been from GT. Ashok Sharma should have been rewarded for being highest wicket taker in SMAT and made it to ODI squad as he was part of India A himself before WT20.

GT has way too much quality in bowling sitting on bench.

Let us not invent reasons for hsi selection as we already have why he got picked.

There are no reasons to invent.

Most teams just itch to pick 6'5" hit the deck pacers who can bowl 140 k+.

When such a pacer performs in A-team series it gives all the more reason to pick him.

In a nutshell

1)  Identify the types of players you are looking for.

2) Among those player types, pick those players who are performing for India A or the IPL or domestic cricket.

Just performances don't mean a lot at pre-internstional level for new players unless that player type is wanted by the TM.

It has to be a combination of wanted player type and performance. The player must have attributes to be a good international cricketer.

I am not a GT Fan, not from Gujarat or Punjab and there are many pacers quicker than Gurnoor in India ( most posters know I prefer the quickest pacers )  Yet Gurnoor is my first pick for tests among newbies. Not for any non-cricketing reason but because Team India badly needs a couple of tall hit the deck bounce bowlers for flat conditions.

This A tour happened after Mukesh had played his last test. IF he is not on the radar why did he play A tour. None of the BCCI selections have any logic with a good reason because most of these selections are based on some external forces.  They could have very well have left Brar out nobody would have raised the eye brow as much as they did for Nabi who has grabbed 104 wickets in 2 back to back seasons for peanuts. Apart from ICF nobody even knows about him. Even here not many has really seen his videos.

From what i see he is like this gun barrell straight bowler. with short strides for a tall guy. Look at his run up. reminds me of Arjun Tendulkar.

He probably has attributes like Pankaj singh who was about 6'5", and had some decent domestic stats.  But need to some video where you can go WOW. There are a lot of tall fast bowlers we have seen over the years. How did he even get to Rest of INdia,  India A with very little record anywhere. From what i understood, Gill knew him since u19 days. He pushed for him being net bowler for GT. Things took off from there. Basically direct influence from GT.  Agarkar fell for it. SO he had to invent reasons.

I have watched Gurnoor bowl a lot in televised red ball matches. Must have watched more than 40 overs or even more. Ball by ball spells.

In red ball he puts the ball in good areas at 137 k to 145 k, gets steep bounce and seam movement and does this even in the 3rd session of the day. Never tires.

Extracts life out of pitches, even flat ones.

In white ball he goes upto high 140s but his skill-set is not as developed as red ball cricket. Which is why I want him in tests but Ashok Sharma in ODIs.

Let us see how he goes in internationals and how long he will play for India. Harshit Rana return will also play a role in how his career will go unless he does well and make himself irreplaceable.  If he fails points will be turned against Agarkar although Gill got him into Mohali district, punjab, GT net ball bowling, GT team. He literally brought him into the set up from the ground up. So he better delivers for his friend.

Temperament and fitness play big roles in success too. Then there is hunger for success. And no one can predict these till a few years have passed.

One thing I can say is .... it will be good for Indian cricket if Gurnoor comes good. If he fails, due to poor temperament or poor fitness, it won't be easy for us to find another such really tall, quick, bouncy yet accurate pacer in red ball.

All the best to the young man !

From what I have seen he has real good attributes to succeed. That's why he played for India A... some chomu selector likely fumbled and sent Gurjapneet for emerging Asia cup jumping the queue and he was left on standby waiting in India which was very unfair.

Most of us knew Kamboj will fail as he was run of the mill and even worse version of Mukesh Kumar.  Mukesh actually had some seam bowling skill at least.

Akashdeep has had a impact when he is fully fit (which is a rarity unfortunately)

Indian cricket needs someone like Gurnoor to come good as he is a rare commodity in Indian circuit.  Now let's back the young guy and hope he delivers on the promise.

As for Nabi supporters he likely will be picked for next India A series in Sri Lanka for 4 day games ..

We will see how good he is.

No one gets Directly picked for Indian team without performing for India A.

Deep down even selectors know Ranji Trophy is dogs*t level these days

Ishant had the attitude, skill which was handy in the back end of his career although took a backseat under MSD. As a 19 year old he was highly impressive in Australia and also had very flexible body and smoother action that kept him injury free for long time. His biggest skill was he could bowl miserly and also in helpful conditions like swinging conditions he could create an impact that others would fail to do. Shami, Bumrah, Ishant complemented each other in different conditions.  RIght now SIraj is being a workhorse for us although he is more than that.  With loss of shami and declining fitness of Bumrah we need high impact bowlers who can take wickets with good strike rate.  If he is going to be that, it is fine.

There are no "nabi supporters". This is about being fair to everyone. We are rejecting a guy who had back to back successive seasons purely based on attributes without giving a single chance. But why was Nabi not picked for India A tour? We don't rate Mukesh. Fine. I agree. But he playd India A. How come a guy who has 104 wickets in 2 seasons could not get a chance in India A.

Also when we make a sweeping claim Ranji trophy performance is dogs.. He reduced Karnataka to 54/4 on a road wicket. HE took out Rahul, Nair (two played tests for us), Smaran (who made 950 runs in domestic season)  on that wicket. How is that a sh** performance.  Guy has bowled over 500 overs taking 104 wickets 13 five wicket hauls in 18 matches.  Led his side to title win. We jsut reject him "hey you are a trundelr who is short. don't care what you did" and pick a guy who is tall with far less record at any level.

I am a big fan of extreme pace. But i won't be slighting performance of guys like nabi based on my prejuidice. If the Ranji performance is sh** why did Karun Nair play Tests for us?

Trundler apologists in India are dime-a-dozen. People don't realise that line and length without skills or some special attribute is useless. Casual fans as well as the batting obsessed Indian experts don't understand that value of pace. Won't be surprised to see us become the worst bowling side again as even our spin stocks are bare.

Ranji trophy alone should be the basis for selection not an idiotic batting fest like IPL, glad Gurnoor made it, wish Aquib had made it too, hope to see the quartet of Ashok Sharma, Tyagi, Mayank and Malik bowl together for India

High impact bowlers need to be complete bowlers they shouldn't be confined to specific traits.

A team's core bowling line up should always be an all conditions attack,if not the absolute best fit for the given conditions. The only traits that truly work in all conditions are bounce and pace especially when combined with movement

while you should include bowlers who can exploit specific overcast conditions if you are certain they will succeed, they shouldn't be used everywhere. We desperately need bowlers with a high release point, which is why you see teams prioritizing height and vertical bounce

Yes certainly Ranji's aren't shyte, had it been that way we wouldn't have remained a top force in red ball for good 8-9 years

People need to strike a balance while posting

Aquib deserves his chance but I think he should be flied to NZ where we are scheduled to play 2 tests,he can make a difference there

Time and again and it may sound prophetic i believe even most on  ICF knew Nair is gonna fail.

It's a shame that we brought back a guy in nearing his mid 30's back into Indian set up in a country which is known for its batting pedigree.

Why not Yash Dhull or Priyam Garg or some other youngster was thrown into the deep end?  These kids have come from pathway cricket at least.

I have closely followed Ranji Trophy and none of the top performers seem impressive last year.

When a team like JnK with no infrastructure and base and not even a standard turf in their state wins the premier tournament it is a slap on the domestic system and raises the question where the heck is all that money going??

Nabi not being picked for India A is different matter as there might be other reasons.  Selectors simply don't rate him could be one of the reasons.

He will be given India A games as he really did well this time around considering everything and if he does well he will make it India's test team for NZ where his skills might come handy.
