Number Posted June 29 Posted June 29 (edited) Haven't followed IPL last few seasons. But overall Iyer has struck me as a non-serious unambitious character. The way he got out against England in home test series, subsequently dropped to play first class and he came up with an excuse that he has back-pain then NCA called his bluff. I kind of lost any respect I had for him. https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/shreyas-iyer-fit-says-nca-day-after-he-opts-out-of-ranji-trophy-back-pain-9174141/ Makes me really doubtful of his coming stint. But I hope that this series was just a blip. Edited June 29 by Number Frustrated, express bowling and Suhaan 3

Its weird iyer cult keeps bringing up Patidar as a gotcha. I see this propaganda online, as if iyer can only he replaced by Patidar and these are the only optoons we can have and its obvious dishonesty. Ishan, samson, etc can be captain without changing our wolrd cup winning team much Board structures Indian team around IPL performances n PR. We can't escape it. tapandrun Posted June 30 Posted June 30 (edited) its okay to pick t20i players from IPl , there is nothing wrong in it. But making some1 captain who was not even in the side is completely wrong. Just shows how Ind team in diff. formats are being picked on ipl performances. Iyer was not a v.good t20 batter, yes he has improved in last few yrs and showed in ipl, but then you add him as normal player rather than Captain. Selecting Gill Vc and now Iyer as captain, think there is something not fitting in all this. They are just dropping players from outside to be captain and Vice Captain. AKane Posted June 30 Posted June 30 I mean the total unravelling of the Punjab Zamindars/Jahgirdars after the 6-0-1 start while the Iyer did his thing was clue enough of what was to come but the powers-that-be saw something else. express bowling and New guy 2

They took it lightly and didn't turn up. Ofcourse the dimensions part I totally understand. 90% of our players have pure skills and zero brains ( ICT made ZERO contribution in cricketing innovations) . The few are gloated non stop like MS, Ashwin. Edited June 30 by Vk1 express bowling 1
Vk1 Posted June 30 Posted June 30 You go to Eden Park - NZ and you consider the dimensions. We went with two spinners in Birmingham 2019 league game against England knowing fully well about the really short boundary on one side. These things happen all the time in Aus/SL etc.. Shocking to see Iyer turn up so unprepared for his first series as Indian captain. express bowling and putrevus 2
Adamant Posted July 2 Posted July 2 Ipl <<<<<<<<<<<< T20i. Bashing bowlers on pattas with small boundary is not comparable to playing serious innings for the nation. AKane and Frustrated 2

But I hope that this series was just a blip. This is going overboard. He almost died taking a catch in Australia last year, even before that he dislocated his shoulder taking a catch in a bilateral which ruled him out for many months. Anybody who gives his best in fielding, puts his body on the line, is a serious character. His back spasms thing is real, he had to get daily injections in his spine just to stay upright during that phase, got a surgery in England (some nerve related issue in spine) and for some time, one of his legs was paralyzed. NCA doctors are paindus, they have 0% success rate. Anyway he has informed BCCI to not consider him for red ball selection. vvvslaxman, Ultimate_Game and Lord 1 2

He has some quirks, weaknesses. He also has a lot of strengths. While it is being fair to criticize for his negatives, we should not be downplaying his positives as part of it. Ultimate_Game 1

From disobeying bcci protocols to not participating in ranji trophy..the list goes on. There was a reason he was removed from the bcci central contract couple of years ago. A player being a good fielder (who throws his body on the line) does not necessarily make a dedicated/serious cricketer. By that logic, Ajay Jadeja can't be a match fixer coz he was a gun fielder who used to give his best in fielding. Always used to throw his body on the line. Manucrick 1

Those injuries while taking catches were mostly poor landing/diving techniques. He managed to piss off even a very lenient and supportive coach like Rahul Dravid in that series and lost central contract. He complained that he starts getting back pain after 30 minutes of batting, I doubt NCA would have declared him fit without checking that part. Also my doubts on him are not just based on that, you pick his last 10 ODI innings where he is the mainstay and honestly tell me if he has shown any spark ? At his age and experience he should be a worldclass middle order batsman but he doesn't really produce match winning performances that often to become that. Frustrated and Manucrick 2

Samson did well on the flattest pattas known to mankind. If the same WC was in America he would have shat his pants. Rohit Sharma was a legendary batsman, he can manage anywhere in LOIs.
