It's one thing you like test cricket. The whole package - long drawn out tussle of bat v/s ball - how captaincy plays a role - sessions and winning each session is important - attacking field setting even at 500/5 with a new ball - not being safe even after scoring 400 runs on D1 - concept of a draw - boring and thrilling draws - rain changes the match scenario in a session

Test cricket is at it's best on a lively track. It is about as boring as watching paint dry on patta wickets, where as one can see some excitement in LOIs on pattas. That said, to the why 5-day/2 inning format, it seems like that is a good balance to achieve a result, as in 20 wickets for one side. We've hardly seen tests finish in 2 days, rarely in 3, less often in 4 days, surely in 5 days. Would be interesting to see stats on how many tests finished in 2, 3, 4, 5 days and for those unfinished tests were we "close" to a finish on a day 6 possibly or was is a patta which wasn't worth playing on to start with? Seems like quite a few these days could have used a 6th day, but then again, there has to be some reasonable limit.

For all official 5-day matches (as opposed to 6-day, timeless, etc), the number of days to get a result (in matches that got results)
+------+------------+
| Days | NumMatches |
+------+------------+
| 1 | 4 |
| 2 | 115 |
| 3 | 219 |
| 4 | 411 |
| 5 | 228 |
+------+------------+

they should reduce the 5 day tests to 4 days maybe even 3 days. encourages more results as captains will be adventurous with their declarations. the concept of a draw should be eliminated, each team can play 90 overs a innings max or can declare earlier if they choose to. the team that bats last MUST chase down the total, no more holding out for a draw.

^Thatll be like on huge one dayer. (a 3 dayer :hehe:) and Im not sure itll solve the main problem which is that it has become hugely batsman friendly. If anything itll make that issue worse. Maggot B makes a v good point about how pitch behavious changes as well, which makes it so much more fascinating and brings in all kinds of tactics/strategy Great draws can be pretty awesome and its great having all three possibilites still open on the last day of play say is great. But as Yoda says pitches need to be made far more sporting then they are in order to eliminate draws.

more research should be made into use of artificial pitches which can be tuned to deliver certain amount of bounce, spin and pace. wonder why no breakthrough has been done in this regard. all the money flowing into cricket and still we have to deal with kotla like pitches.
