Guest dada_rocks
Re: A female medal winner at asiad found not female enough Beetle, the condition develops because a person who is genetically male has tissue resistance to male hormones. In the complete form, the person develops exactly like a female, except that she doesn't have ovaries or uterus, hence can't menstruate, and there is no pubic or armpit hair. And there is no competitive advantage, because muscles do not develop like males due to hormone resistance In the incomplete form, newborn are often born with ambiguous genitals, causing confusion about gender. The child will probably look like a female, but at puberty, some male characteristics may develop, such as deep voice, body hair or enlargement of the "clitoris". Such people do indeed have a competitive advantage in sport over other females, because their muscles will have been exposed to some male hormones. The incomplete form can sometimes be confused with a disorder called 5-alpha reductase deficiency, which can also cause confusion about gender. Most of these people, however, grow up as males. Quite informative.. Now the vilification of this girl must stop, it's not her fault at all.
beetle
Re: A female medal winner at asiad found not female enough If she has no advantage ...then she should be allowed to compete. For a change ...the politicians have dealt with it in a sensitive manner.

ViVeriUniversumVivusVici
Re: A female medal winner at asiad found not female enough sort of puts a topic into perspective that has always been pushed under the rug by most international athletics committees: that of the recognition of transgendered or otherwise medically deviant athletes such as those suffering from Dow's syndrome. there was some talk about removing the ambiguity about what category a transgendered athlete must participate under by using a medical threshold. i.e. if the athlete displays characteristics beyond the particular threshold they would be classified as one gender and vice versa. but i guess that was shot down since it violated the fact that some of these athletes would be classified under a category different from their then legally recognized gender... its a huge mess! and the subject is so extraordinary that few are courageous enough to deal with it.
