Laxman to lead Hyderabad in 2012-13 Ranji Trophy

The Ranji Trophy, despite being India’s premier domestic cricket competition, usually doesn’t attract a lot of eyeballs, but it will be different when Hyderabad play Punjab in their 2012-13 season-opener. The match, starting on November 2 in Mohali, will have two big stars leading the respective teams – VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh. Laxman, who retired from international cricket on August 18, just before the start of the Test series against New Zealand, was named Hyderabad’s captain on Sunday (October 21). Harbhajan’s appointment as Punjab captain was made earlier this month, on October 4. At the time of announcing his retirement, Laxman had expressed a desire to continue playing for his state and contribute to Hyderabad cricket, adding that he would represent the team this season in a bid to realise his long-standing dream of winning the Ranji Trophy. Dwaraka Ravi Teja, who led Hyderabad last season, will be the vice-captain of the team, while Pragyan Ojha, who was a part of India’s playing XI during the New Zealand Test series at home, was also named in the squad for the game against Punjab. Sunil Joshi, the former India left-arm spinner who also retired from competitive cricket earlier this year, will continue as the team’s coach, while Noel David, who represented India in four One-Day Internationals in 1997, remains the fielding coach.

Harbhajan to lead Punjab Ranji side Harbhajan Singh, the India offspinner, has been named Punjab's captain for the upcoming Ranji season. More... India domestic news Harbhajan to lead Punjab Ranji side ESPNcricinfo staff October 4, 2012 Harbhajan Singh, the India offspinner, has been named Punjab's captain for the upcoming Ranji season. He has been out of the Indian Test side for more than a year, but returned to the Twenty20 squad for the World T20 last month. Harbhajan flew back home after sustaining an injury during the tour of England last year. He led Mumbai Indians to the Champions League trophy, proof of his ability to perform in T20, but picked up a shin injury around the time he was omitted from India's squad for Australia. That injury also curtailed his Ranji season to three matches, when as Punjab captain he only took two wickets for 204 runs. He also led Punjab in the one-day Vijay Hazare tournament and the Twenty20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This year, he signed a county contract with Essex, where he played steadily if not spectacularly (13 first-class wickets at 33). His presence in the side will be a boost to Punjab, who are without a head coach after Vikram Rathour vacated the post to become a national selector. Punjab Ranji squad: Harbhajan singh (capt), Mandeep Singh (vice-capt), Karan Goel, Jeevanjot Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Uday Kaul, Mayank Sidhana, Amitoze Singh, Rahul Sharma, Siddarth Kaul, Manpreet Gony, Sandeep Sharma, Gurkirat Mann, Bipul Sharma and Rajwinder Singh

Batting at 4, opening the bowling and Vice Captain! :hail: What a team though Yuvi, Bhaji, Kaul, Mandy, Rahul, Sandeep. Shame most of these will play tests for India. Should still cruise to Ranji title though.
For doing that they need to get into the knock out stages. Think they have not made it to the QFs of Ranji for the last 6-7 years!

The schedule is very tight and hectic. They have just come back from CLT20 and there is also a tight schedule ahead with England and Aus visiting so the cricketers need rest. The out of form players can be asked to play in Ranji though.
The players playing CLT20 were playing a hit and giggle league. Likes of Dhoni, Raina , Sachin have played 4 matches in a span of nearly 4 weeks (make it 9 matches in nearly 7 weeks including World T20 for Dhoni, Raina etc). They came back from SA 2 days ago. 1st test vs Eng starts on 15th Nov. Wonder why they need 3 weeks of rest especially when they haven't played a FC match after NZ tests. Its ridiculous that Dhoni hasn't played a match for Jharkhand since 2005. Yes, the schedule for him has been crazy but this time there should be no excuses. Play the match from Nov 2-5 and you will still have a week off before the team gets together for the 1st test.

I endorse your opinion. However, players like Pujara have been playing domestic cricket and will continue to do so. Good for them.
