Sarcasm detection meter .... beep, beep.  :phehe:

He has clearly been rushed back after injury. At his current fitness level he can try to be our No.28 in tests.

I meant for the NZ tour in November :phehe:

Why is he in any team ??

In test matches, Washington averages almost 45 as a batter and 30 as a bowler. Can be a backup / replacement to Jadeja as a batting all-rounder at 7.

Can't play as a specialist bowler.

But adds no value as a white ball player.

But have we not moved away from bits and pieces players? We need players who are impact. Having said that, I think for Test, for his batting alone, Washington is not bad. But we need stronger alternatives who have a better average and strike rate as bowlers.

Now that Nitish Reddy has increased his pace, I would want him to put in more effort so he can be more than just a 1st, 2nd change bowler in Tests.

T20 anyway is a very dynamic format. You never know what clicks. But we still need a stronger team, and I think we need better pitches for IPL. IPL is draining too much energy off for the International team. We need better approach if we have to survive international circuit and Test format.

Very true.

I think, for SENA tests, they are planning something like

1 to 6 .. Batsmen

7.  Washington / Jadeja

8. Nitish

9. Gurnoor

10. Siraj

11. Bumrah

But if all 3, Washy, Nitish, Jaddu play together then the team will be weak.

Can't compromise with best 6 batsmen at the top.

Absolutely. Plus larger boundaries.

Cannot have that. Can't do away with specialists. We can have one of them in a Test, as per the conditions. We need pure players, solid players for our team. And it's not that the bench strength is weak. We have abundance. Just that the right talent is not being given the right opportunity.

Wasnt sure where to put this, hence just dropped in this thread.

Lovely seeing Ambrose & Walsh together after so long. Ambrose was my first motivation/obsession towards fast bowling and I used to copy his action for years.

Seeing both after so long feels so good but at the same time reminds me of that era which has gone by and probably will never be back.

Good to see the admission from both of them(Cuddy especially) that they used to bowl military medium at times.

They talk about accuracy and the wobble seam as well.

Reminds me of the 2000 West Indies tour of England.

Walsh and Amby were averaging 80 and 82mph respectively.   But their accuracy, wobble seam, release height and massive backspin made English batsmen struggle.

Reon King was averaging 87 mph and bowling 90mph + bumpers easily but even Athers with his degenerative back condition was hooking him with ease.

As Ambrose said, its not sustainable to bowl 100% day in and day out across every game. Coz body will get tired and then the first thing which will happen is loss of radar. Also, once you age the body takes a lot of time to recover.

But the bowlers usually add more skills as they age to compensate for the loss of pace. In case of Walsh & Ambrose, their biggest weapon was the bounce they used to get courtesy of their massive height, else I don't think Ambrose or Walsh were ever a 145+ bowler..Ambrose in his prime was around 136-143 while Walsh maybe 133-139. In 2000s both were 5-7k down in their pace.

In the last 5 years or so, we are seeing 34 yr+ pacers sustaining speeds as well as hitting high speeds.

Starc and Hazlewood are good examples. Wood plays sporadically, but bowls at his quickest. Anderson played till 40 but was still bowling 130 to 140 k.

Probably also because of sports dieticians..nutrionists..physio..medical staff etc the newer generation is able to sustain for long time while the workload has been very demanding

Yeah, overall fitness has improved for the pacers. Also the awareness about Workload management. Diets have improved as well across the world.

These pacers like Ambrose & Walsh also used to play county games during off season, and bowlers a lot of overs. Hence it's natural that they will slow down.

I remember seeing Alan Donald in 2003 WC and it was painful to see him trundling in late 120s to early 130s. The same Donald was devastatingly quick when India toured SA in 1996-97.

Donald looked fast medium(still sharp and fast),it was Klusener who looked visibly quicker and Srinath

Sum of multiple things:

  • Having good medical care, workload and understanding of sports mechanics
  • Presence of Speedometer - if the pace is going down bowler would know to rectify before it too late
  • Previously once the bowlers had made a name fr themselves batters would not go after them
  • A lot competition can not sit out and may lose place in the side
  • Pitches getting flatter so have to sustain he pace else 135 kmph does not work

Who will replace the injured Harshit Rana in the ODI squad ?

They can bring in Ashok Sharma.

Mr Kambhoj may be next in line.
