Sachin Tendulkar: The genius shines brightly at the mega event By Tapan Joshi Sachin Tendulkar is a veteran of four ICC Cricket World Cups and he has excelled in them all. Sadly, India as a team have not shown the same consistency in the mega event during the Tendulkar era. As a teenaged sensation, he captured the imagination of veterans like Allan Border through his bold stroke play in the 1992 ICC Cricket World Cup. He was also in devastating form during the 1996 ICC CWC that was played on the Indian sub-continent, though he was bested by the Sri Lankans in that event. He is on our list of legends despite never winning the event, because he is by far the tournament's highest scorer and (jointly with Mark Waugh) scorer of most centuries. The merits of the Lara Vs Ponting Vs Tendulkar debate may long be argued over their Test records; in the ODI game, however, Tendulkar has no equal, at this or at any other time. He is simply the greatest One Day batsman in history, amassing over 40 centuries. One of the most painful sights for Indian fans during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup was to see a tearful Tendulkar leave the tournament mid-way to attend his father's funeral. Committed to the cause, Tendulkar rejoined the team for the match against Kenya and duly scored a hundred. During the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, he almost single-handedly took India to the final and emerged as the highest run-getter in that edition of the mega event. India failed in the final hurdle against Australia, losing tamely, but Tendulkar's knock against Pakistan is regarded as a modern-day classic. Did You Know? Sachin Tendulkar was named after a famous Indian music composer and director, Sachin Dev Burman, who was an idol for Tendulkar?s late father Ramesh. Tendulkar in numbers: ODIs: 374, runs: 14,537, highest: 186 not out, average: 44.05, 100s: 40, 50s: 74, wickets: 143, best: 5/32. Tendulkar in World Cups: ODIs: 33, runs: 1732, highest: 152, average: 59.72, 100s: 4, 50s: 12, wickets: 6, best: 2/28
