SAI sacks India's men's hockey coach Michael Nobbs

Another major shake-up awaits Indian hockey after the Sports Authority of India (SAI) sacked India's men's hockey coach Michael Nobbs due to the team's unsatisfactory performance in the last year. The Australian, who is currently away on a two-week leave, was sacked after SAI convened a review meeting to assess the team's overall performance in a period of a shade over two years during which Nobbs was the coach. HI's high-performance manager Roelant Oltmans has been asked to take charge of the national camp in Bangalore and will also be the team's chief coach until Nobbs replacement is named. MK Kaushik will be the new national coach. Nobbs still has three years left on his contract, which runs until the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, but Hockey India (HI) secretary Narinder Batra said the decision was taken since the team was not progressing. "We realised that the team was not progressing. SAI and HI felt that the team was stuck at one place and to move forward we are looking for new ideas, and so we decided to part ways with Nobbs," Batra said on Tuesday. The Indian men's team finished last at the 2012 London Olympics (the country's worst finish at the Games), where it lost all its matches. India also failed to book a berth at the 2013 World Cup when it finished sixth in the FIH World League Round 3 in Rotterdam last month.
