Sachin most hit, other seniors also hit by sponsorship curbs
Captain Dravid seeks to clear the air on BCCI's new endorsements policy The board has made it amply clear that all pre-existing contracts will be honoured, and no retrospective action taken. This means that the seniormost players - people like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly - many of whose existing contracts are likely to out-last their careers, are unlikely to be adversely affected. It is people like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik, whose careers are just taking off, who could be seriously affected. ----------------------------- So there you go Bumper......

Re: Sachin most hit, other seniors also hit by sponsorship curbs Hmm, this is almost having the opposite effect. It is the seniors whose contracts are coming in the way of their cricket. BCCI MUST do something about current contracts too.

Re: Sachin most hit, other seniors also hit by sponsorship curbs like i said, this is an absurd rule anyway you look at it and it obviously cannot apply to existing contracts as those will be legally binding on the players unless they an opt out clause based on the BCCI going crazy. also, limiting the number of contracts per sponsor would mean a player like dinesh karthick or munaf patel can't get a nike contract if nike has already grabbed a couple of top dogs.

Re: Sachin most hit, other seniors also hit by sponsorship curbs Endorsements: BCCI decision controversial Farahanaaz Dastur, Rica Roy Sunday, April 8, 2007 (Mumbai, New Delhi) The curb on player endorsements remains a very controversial decision. Team India was once virtually team Samsung. Endorsements have been an integral part of making cricketers large than life in India. But the BCCI thinks that sponsorship contracts are to blame for players' performances. That is why they have accepted and heeded the suggestions of the seven former captains to cap players' endorsements. "No one wants to deny anyone making a buck but when it happens at an early age and without proper education, you may be caught in another world and lose the focus to play cricket the way it should be played at that age," said Ravi Shastri, Manager Team India. So from now onwards players can only endorse three products each.No sponsor can contract more than two players, so no more team Samsung or Pepsi blue billion. Players cannot do ad shoots 15 days before a tour or during a tour even though there are often just 15 days between two cricket tours. All contracts including pre-existing ones have to be cleared by the board but pre-existing contracts can continue. No media contracts And finally no player except for the captain can have media contracts with TV channels or newspapers. "You may get to understand an ad several times on the television but the fact is that a cricketer does not take much time to do that advert, its a few hours of work. The BCCI may say don't shoot beyond a number of days but when he is free at home, as long as they do not clash with the endorsements, they can do whatever they want. However cricket commitments are a priority," said Jeet Banerjee, Managing Director, Gameplan. The BCCI insists that players are doing too many endorsements and that means too much time. Tendulkar for example has 14 contracts right now and at five days per sponsor it means that he is spending up to 70 days fulfilling his sponsor commitments. Dravid similarly would spend 60 days while Dhoni would spend up to 75 days. The BCCI, however, says players need not worry since pre-existing sponsorships will continue to be valid. But that the terms of the contract have to be cleared by the board. They say one particular player's contract was linked to the number of minutes he spent at the crease rather than the runs he scored which was detrimental to team interests as was the concept of graded contracts. So now Dravid and Uthappa will get the same amount of money rather than being put into 'a', 'b' and 'c' categories. --------------------------------------------------------- We just have to wait and see if this clause can EVER materialise. Just now heard on CNN-IBN that BCCI is thinking of incresing the limit from 3 to 5 endorsements. I can't believe anything till BCCI issues next statement.
