Benn, Steyn and spitting

Recommended Posts

This would look unfair if you consider only that incident in isolation. Both were level2 offences' date=' both pleaded guilty. Benn was always going to face the stiffer punishment because of his already bad track record.[/quote'] Yes. But spitting = 100% match fee fine only, while needling = Match ban? To give ICC a benefit of doubt, maybe they deemed it right to punish the provocateur. Fair enough. But WHY was the provocateur let off in the Shane Watson-Gautam Gambhir tangle? You can't conveniently fine the provocateur and opportunely ban the provoked. The same rules apply to everyone. Match Referring has been a joke for a very long time. Its only a matter of time before ICC gets divided on this row.

Again, you are judging the incident in isolation. Benn was not punished for that incident alone. His provocation added to what all he has already done in the past have resulted in the punishment. He obviously proved that milder punishments are not working on him, so he was always going to get a match ban on his next offense, whatever it would have been. As it turns out, his next offense provoked a spitting from Steyn, but the match ban was coming his way anyways. As far as Steyn spitting is concerned, he got away light with what he did. The only thing unjust in this episode is that spitting should not be a level2 offense. It's much worse than that.

Its pretty simple' date=' when a WI player spits at a SA player the penalty was 100% of his match fee. Why would you expect the penalty to be different when its the other way around.[/quote'] And was Smithy banned? :finger: My issue is not with Steyn getting away with that, but Benn being banned for god knows what?

Isn't it strange that South Africa, decided to use their "clout" against West Indies and let obvious ball tamperers from England get away? Also, the Smith incident proves that ICC match referee's and the quality of their "decisions" have constantly been deteriorating. Athough I buy DK's point about Benn's record, the reason behind his dubious record are harsh punishments for joke crimes, crimes that any Pom, Aussie, and the Saffer gets away with but Benn doesn't. No subcontinent player does. If they start banning players for needling and do it fairly, we would see the players of the aforementioned teams play once in 5 games, if they don't get banned for life, i.e. The next war in ICC will be fought on umpiring and match refereeing. And if anyone opposes the 6 countries, it would be stupid. Australia has already "advised" India to stop "interfering in the disciplinary matters. If WI joins hand with the Asian bloc, its really gonna spell doom for the "neutral" umpires. I really hope ICC is looking into the "neutrality" of the neutral umpires.

You dont know why Benn was banned but everyone else does, because he barged into the SA dressing rooms abusing everyone and looking for a fight. Had he shut his bunghole and controlled himself he would have walked away without any punishment.

I dont know what his problem is, Gayle thought he was so bad he sent him off the field during a game, never seen a captain do that before. He also had a big fight with Darren Ganga when he captained him in his local league. He has had many problems with other players so there must be a point in time when you say Benn is allways taking issue with players and needs to have a attitude adjustment. Notice how he pleaded guilty to the charge and the WICB accepted it without a mumur. He is now a liability to the West Indies team so its up to him where he goes from here.

The "Gayle asks him to march" incident is behind the WI, atleast thats what Gayle said, in defence of him sending off his best friend, Sulieman Benn. He's a good bowler. He needs to learn how to needle subtlely, like his best mate Chris Gayle.
