Man kills daughter's teen lover A 17-year-old boy died after being mercilessly beaten up by the father of his girlfriend at the latter's Oshiwara house. The girl fled the home after the incident and the police are trying to trace her. The girl's father has been arrested for murder. The incident took place on Monday when the boy, Saddam Shaikh, went to the residence of his 15-year-old girlfriend. The girl helped the boy sneak into her room on the mezzanine floor through a window, while her parents were watching television on the ground floor. A little later, the girl's mother was surprised to find the lights on in her daughter's room so late in the night. She went up to her room and found the door locked. She knocked on her door repeatedly, but there was no answer. The mother then forcibly entered the room and was shocked to find Saddam there. She then called out to her husband, Amir, who works as a taxi driver. An enraged Amir beat Saddam black and blue till the boy fell unconscious. After tying Saddam to a chair, Amir asked his wife to approach the Oshiwara cops and tell them that they had caught a thief. The police rushed to the couple's house and found a badly bruised Saddam. They rushed the boy to Cooper Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. The police found loopholes in Amir's story and suspected that something was amiss. They grilled him and his wife. Amir broke down and told the cops that he lost his cool when he found the boy inside his daughter's bedroom and beat him up. Saddam was a school dropout and had met the girl through a friend. :fear:

Actor Aamir Khan and lyricist Prasoon Joshi talk to the media after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to discuss how they could be a part of a social awareness campaign on malnourished children, at Parliament House in New Delhi on Wednesday nation3.jpgAamir brings a lighter moment to Parliament The deadlock in Parliament had its sunshine moments today when actor Aamir Khan came to visit Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar. For a lady who has been urging the MPs for the past fortnight to let the House run, Aamir’s compliment came as a soother. He said, “I have seen you conduct the House with great dignity”. The Speaker was quick to return the praises heaping them on Aamir whose films like “3 Idiots” and “Peepli Live”, have caught the public imagination like never before. “We love your films too,” said Meira, describing the star visitor as a “hero in the real sense”. But all that praise could not make a disciplined Aamir Khan break his diet regimen. So when the Speaker asked him to savour some delicacies from the Parliament canteen, the actor excused himself. When he was urged to have atleast a “rasagulla”, Aamir replied, “I am sorry but I am on a diet for the film I am shooting.” The actor was, in fact, even dressed for a shoot and looked like he had landed straight from the sets. This was Aamir Khan’s first visit to the Parliament, where he is associated with a group of young MPs who are working to fight child malnutrition. Among these MPs are Punjab’s Harsimrat Badal, DMK patriarch Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanhi Mozhi, Minister of State Sachin Pilot, BJP’s Shahnawaz Hussain and Congress’ Priya Dutt.

New Delhi In secret operation, 380 cops nab two rape accused A posse of 380 undercover policemen armed with AK-47s and bulletproof vests crept into a nondescript village in Haryana late on Wednesday night. Merging with the shadows, the policemen, split into 20 teams to cover all exits, were looking for the men accused of raping a 30-year-old,call centre employee in south Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan on November 24. After six hours, the raid at Dhaujj village in Mewat region, 50 km from Delhi, yielded two of the five accused — Shamshad alias Khutkan (25) and Usman alias Kale (25). Both are under arrest. Usman was out on bail in a 2007 gangrape case in Faridabad. To evade arrest in the rape case, a third accused — Shahid alias Chota Billi (25) — had surrendered to a Haryana court last week in a cow slaughter case. Two are absconding. Dominated by the Meo community, Mewat is one of the most backward districts of Haryana, where acute poverty leads to frequent cattle theft and truck-lifting. The police are known to keep away since those who have visited the region often ended up with bloodied noses and fractured bones. On November 29, HT had reported that for fear of a violent backlash, Delhi Police had gone undercover in the area. This time, taking no chances, 60 armed policemen were sent just to recover the pick-up van used in the crime, which was hidden in Tikri Kalan village. "On the day of the crime, the five men — all from Dhaujj village — had come to Delhi to steal cattle. "They were drunk and while returning, saw the BPO cab with the two women. They tailed it and as soon as the women got down, they abducted one at gunpoint while the other escaped,” said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal. The five then allegedly raped the victim in their tempo, dumping her 40 minutes later in a Mongolpuri lane. Grappling for clues, the police latched on to the bundle of R10 notes the accused left behind. "We were sure these people entered the city through a border area after we found the bundle of notes tied with a rubber band that they left with the victim, so she could get home. "Through technical surveillance and human intelligence, it was found that three groups from Mewat were active in the city that day on the same route. We sent one of our head constables from the area to gather information and finally sent a team on Wednesday night to arrest them,” said the officer.

Priyanka Swats Rs. 3 Crore Offer; Refuses Shimmy On New Year Eve Stars and the high moolah that they command and demand… can send shock waves up one's psyche. The asking fee for New Year boogie woogie by stars, in particular, can send one reeling. A certain Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora Khan and Mallika Sherawat can vouch well for that. One actress, though, is not succumbing to the lure of the lucre. Priyanka Chopra. Reportedly, PC swatted down an offer of Rs. 3 crore to shimmy and gyrate at a five star hotel for New Year 2010 eve nite ( as per insiders, the mentioned fee is double her fee for a single flick). What's better, she could have romped home happily with 3 crores for as little as three hours of work! Close sources aver that Priyanka's reason for chucking the offer is that she's in no tearing hurry to tear down the 'diva' image that she has so painstakingly cultivated over the years. States an insider, "A five star hotel in suburban Mumbai did come up with the Rs. 3 crore offer for New Year's eve, but Priyanka was very uncomfortable dancing in hotels in front of a live audience and she turned them down very politely. The fee was huge and the hotel officials kept coaxing her, but Priyanka was adamant that she would not accept the offer." :hail:

SC bans sale of gutka in plastic sachets from March 1 The Supreme Court today observed that there was “so much of corruption” in the country because the government was allowing the corporate sector to mislead the young generation by marketing harmful products such as tobacco related articles in attractive packets. Slapping a ban on the sale of gutka, tobacco and pan masala in colourful plastic sachets from March 1 next year, the apex court held the state governments responsible for proliferation of shops selling these products in the vicinity of schools and colleges and corrupting the rich Indian culture, particularly among the youth. “This court should not be seen as a mute spectator to everything that is going on. If the governments fail to discharge their functions, the court must step in,” a Bench comprising Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly observed during arguments on the health hazards of the sachets which contained 10 thin toxic foils.

Safe drop must for women staff The Delhi police today made it mandatory for BPOs, corporate groups, media houses and other organisations to drop their women employees at their doorsteps during night hours and also confirm their safe arrival. The police issued an order under Section 144 of the CrPC. Non-adherence to it would invite registration of a case under Section 188 (disobedience of an official order) of the IPC which entails six months' imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1,000 or both. The order which is effective from today has come after a call centre employee was recently abducted from Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area late at night and gangraped by five persons. The victim was dropped by her cab driver some metres away from her residence when the incident took place. In wake of the increasing rape cases, the police has issued some guidelines for organisations where women work for late nights, said a senior police official. Apart from providing cab facilities, the order has made it compulsory for employers to ensure that a security guard accompanies a woman employee to her residence and ensure her safe arrival if the office vehicle is unable to drop her just outside her house. The order says that cab drivers should not pick any stranger or stray from the designated route, adding that the employers should install GPS in their vehicles for easy tracking. If the house of an employee is located in narrow lanes, the security guard will have to accompany her to her house. "Certain criminal and anti-social elements look for soft targets, particularly during the odd hours. Women employees who travel during late night are vulnerable to crime by such elements, if they are not dropped safely at their places of stay," the official added. To ensure that women employees are not alone in the cab, the order also states that the driver should choose such a route that they are not the first to be picked or the last to be dropped. On December 2, Delhi police commissioner B.K. Gupta said that women working in night shifts should be dropped at their homes and not in nearby streets.

Happy birthday Delhi!

The city that has served as the political epicenter to many empires and dynasties over the centuries, New Delhi is all set to turn 100 tomorrow as the national Capital of India. Celebrations have already started throughout the capital celebrating the remarkable history that the city houses, but there is much more in store over the coming months. It was on December 12, 1911, that the then Emperor of India, George V, announced Delhi to be the new capital of the British Raj from the earlier epicenter, Kolkata. Delhi has traditionally been the centre seat of a series of empires and regimes that have ruled India since over 3,000 years back. It has housed more than eight cities over the centuries and each empire has left behind an unforgettable impression of its heritage that it still preserves. With the national Capital turning 100 years now, it has brought forth an opportunity to celebrate the continuity of its rich habitation over centuries. Also, this is the year when Delhi is seeking nomination for a "world heritage city" status under UNESCO's list. Under that process, heritage NGO's like INTACH, State Archeological Department and the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) have planned a host of events and heritage walks for the common public. The intention has now strengthened with city's centenary celebrations, as INTACH has decided to increase the number of these events and also increase the frequency of heritage walks. For a city that owns such a rich culture, it is important for its residents to be aware of it. This is one of the major criteria for Delhi to be recognised as a world heritage city. The Delhi government in association with other cultural agencies such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations has planned year-long celebrations across the capital. The celebrations will actually kick off in January when the ministry of culture has lined up a number of events that will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the city. Unique exhibitions will showcase several aspects of Delhi's rich history and culture, which will be planned specifically over a period of time and at different venues. One of such exhibitions, "Dastan-e-Dilli" will be also inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Shiela Dikshit and L-G Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday. The exhibition will chronicle the culture of Delhi right from its ancient days to the modern period where both the heritage sites and modern day buildings co-exist today. A photo exhibition is also on the cards as a part of Delhi's centenary celebrations that will focus on all the historical monuments of the city. The Delhi government is also in the process of releasing special souvenirs, including a book on the history of seven cities of Delhi and detailing the account of how the present city was constructed. The book will be released by Dikshit. Though there will be no official ceremony to mark the occasion, the book will be released in the evening.

Class XII boy stabs juniors over girlfriend

Four students of a private school on Sohna Bypass Road near Ballabgarh were stabbed on Tuesday by a senior student, who was "angry" that his girlfriend was being "humiliated'' regularly by the victims. The incident took place around 1.30pm during the lunch break. Police said the Class XII student attacked the students studying in Class XI with a kitchen knife, which he had brought in his school bag. "We have registered a case at Ballabgarh City police station. We have apprehended the accused, who said the argument was mainly over a female friend,'' said Raj Kumar, DCP, Ballabgarh. Investigating officer Ajay Kumar said the four victims are in ICU and two of them are in a serious condition. The police said the accused had on several occasions challenged the Class XI student to have a fight. The two students had earlier fought several times, they said. "During the scuffle, the accused attacked the student, injuring him seriously. When his friends tried to intervene, they too met with the same fate. After injuring the four, the accused fled from the spot. As he was carrying a knife, no one dared to stop him. Later, the injured were taken to a private hospital by the school management. City goes dark during day, winds at 84 kmph

A fierce duststorm, followed by thundershowers and squall caught Delhi by surprise on Tuesday evening, disrupting rush hour traffic even as it brought much-needed relief from the heat. The duststorm and squall plunged the city into darkness at about 5 pm. Parts of the city experienced wind at a speed of 84 kilometres per hour in the storm. The weather phenomenon lasted about 40 minutes. The Met department recorded rainfall of 4.2 millimetres by 5.30 pm. The highest wind speed of 84 kmph was recorded at Safdurjung station of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 5.15 pm, said Dr B P Yadav, IMD director. “Western disturbances, along with local cyclonic activity and the high temperatures, led to the dust storm and thunder storm accompanied by squall. The phenomenon began in western Haryana in the morning and passed through Delhi before moving on to western UP. The storm brought down the temperatures by 10 degrees, from 35 degrees Celsius at 5 pm to 25 degrees by 5.30 pm,” Dr Yadav said. Weather officials said there are chances of similar conditions in the Capital region, though of lesser intensity, in the coming days. Rain is expected to bring some respite from the heat for the city on Wednesday. The strong winds led to trees falling in some parts of the city, leaving residents fuming over improper upkeep of trees by civic agencies. A resident of Golf Links said his and neighbour’s cars were damaged after branches of a tree fell on them due to the storm. “The colony’s residents have repeatedly written to the NDMC asking for the trees to be pruned. The trees are at least 50 years old, and are a threat as there is no proper upkeep despite repeated demands from the RWA,” he said. A maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius was recorded on Tuesday. For Wednesday, the Met has predicted temperatures of between 36 and 22 degrees Celsius.
