yoda
There is worrying censorship within the entertainment industry by religious prudes. This minority dictates what the majority can and cannot watch or read. Additionally, in public, there has been instances of couples being arrested for holding hands, etc. A large portion of the population, maintain an irrational taboo against sensuality, which allows this censorship to go unchallengd. I would like to see change sooner rather than wait decades. there is nothing wrong in a little moderation. we can take things one step at a time. when you have multiple generations involved, a little tolerance towards the conservative values of others isn't all that bad. change is happening all the time. CC1981
BTW' date=' some parts of the above article are very innaccurate - for example, tailored cloth was used in India far before the arrival of Islam - the military has used tailored material since antiquity, with Mauryan troops wearing cloth armor, and shoes of hide. Furthermore, the popular style during the era of the Kushans (before Islam existed) was tailored cloth. Other parts, such as the idea of modesty, appear to mainly be the opinion of the site in question.[/quote'] Actually, tailored clothes were in vogue in India since harappan times. It is a fact that ancient india was the hub of cotton production in the old world till the British arrived. Only other civilization to domesticate and cultivate cotton were the Mayans on the other side of the world. In regards to this thread- India before arrival of islam was an extremely liberal society, in ways more liberal than western society is today. Various forms of dresses were in convention, including topless men and women- as is typical in most tropical civilizations. Though by no means was it universal- india's mantra has been unity in diversity since thousands of years- even in wearing saris, the usage of blouses wernt common except in the winter months. CC1981
Interesting read, GP. It makes me angry how clueless the conservatives are in this issue. By opposing sexual liberation amongst youth, the conservatives are FORCING the prostitution industry on the populace, because that is the only avenue left for sexual release if pre-marital sex is taboo. And it is precisely this phenomenon of millions of men visiting a very small select group of prostitutes that increases the infection-rate and probability exponentially ( if you sleep with someone who's slept with 1000s of customers, you are f*cked). Whereas in the west, AIDS is a very small issue because sexual liberation means that everybody has free choice to sleep with who they want...and in this model, the phenomenon of 'millions visiting prostitutes' is drastically reduced...its all down to everyone having less than a dozen parters on handful and thus the sex-scene is far less 'autonomised'. gorah_pindu
To summarise what happened - basically there were some progressive scientists and educators arguing for treating sex rationally - and others like the Catholic nun who they had on saying that sex education would 'titilate' young Indians. The majority of older people favoured conservative attitudes - the majority of young people favoured liberal attitudes.

CC1981
and others like the Catholic nun who they had on saying that sex education would 'titilate' young Indians. And that'd be wrong because ? Christians and Muslims need to just get over their 'no fun allowed or else evil God punishes you' mentality and approach chastity as Buddhists do - ie, preferrable if you do, no big deal really if you don't, as long as you draw the line before domestic abuse/raping etc etc.
