Expressing his disappointment at being left out of the one-day series against the West Indies, elegant Hyderabadi batsman VVS Laxman said his excellent performance in the recently-concluded Test series against South Africa had boosted his confidence. Talking to a news agency in Hyderabad, Laxman said, ''Well the way I batted in South Africa did a good deal to my confidence. It was of course disappointing to lose the series in the end, which we could have won. But my confidence level is pretty high now and hope it will help me in all my future adventures.'' When asked whether he was disappointed after he was not included in the Indian team to play against the West Indies, against whom he had done well four months ago, he replied, ''I am disappointed a bit. I thought I would get a chance to play against the Caribbeans, as I have always done well against them. But I leave everything to the selectors. It is up to them to decide anything about me.'' But Laxman still has not lost hope. ''Playing World Cup has been my dream. I have not still relinquished my hopes. I did not expect to play against South Africa in the last one dayer and I am still confident that I may be picked for the World Cup That surprise is always there. From my side there is nothing I need to prove.'' Laxman feels that the coming Subbaiah Pillai One- day tournament for the South Zone will be important for him. ''Certainly, domestic matches help you gain confidence and form. I will try to perform to the expectations of all and get a World Cup berth.''

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup best of luck to him.. i remember in 2003, there was competition between him and dines mongia, either one of them was to be picked for wc 03 squad, eventually we all know mongia was picked and laxman was dropped.

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup exactly.. the guy karthik has shown some amount of character, but at the same time has been over hyped too.. we Indians have so much dignity for new players, hope we had same amount of dignity for laborers in our country and the old matez...

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup yea, and plus hes a wicketkeeper, and its not like hes going to get games when Dhoni will always be the number one keeper, so if the issue is back up keeper or Dhoni getting injured dravids always there. Laxman has struck 6 centuries, and we all know his capablities he has nothing to prove. Laxman can be a great anchor and seeing that Dravids game is evolving he can no longer be classified as an anchor, seeing that Yuvraj is kind of rusty who knows how hell perform. Virender Sehwag the whole world knows about his inconsistency. Karthik is not good enough to replace a guy like Laxman who can really frustrate opponents and propel India to big scores. and we all know Laxmans average against Australia, West Indies are good two important team in the world cup. Even a match winning century against Pakistan should help his confidence. Also his recent tour against South Africa as far as batting is concerned.Hes been good against the good teams .Sure his running wasnt great but its was a mix up and i blame sachin 100 percent for that. Lets give him a chances hes too good of a batsmen to be left out, knowing Laxman is a optimist hes probably been working on his fitness vigorously, and who knows maybe if you put him in the outfield, he can show his improvement i didnt know why he wasnt tested in South Africa if it was a such a big issue. Believe me guys if many people in India dont want to see him go to the WC, alot in the outside world want to see him play atleast one. It is believed in the West Indies that hes going to play the world cup.

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup India can't take players along just because they are pleasing to the eye... He has been made Test vice-captain so he is not exactly discarded... but like Justin Langer for Australia he is seen more of a Test specialist... We don't read articles about Langer hoping to make the WC squad...etc... He should accept his limitations and concentrate on Tests... or he should show he has developed the ability to LOFT the ball at will against both medium pacers and spinners... it would be futile to expect him to take on bowling or running between the wickets....

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup but Justin Langer has never shown real interest to play ODI's.Justin Langer has played only 8 ODI's and im sure he would of played more if he was really interested in playing ODI's .the fact that players like Karthik and Uttapha who are inexperienced and keep a class player like Laxman out of the team says it all. Why is Laxmans run outs often blow out of proportion it was a mistake buddy. Mistakes happen its cricket, its a sport. Hes still VVS Laxman.

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup yea but theres nothing like experience, experience wins you games or atleast bring you closer to victory weve seen it in the past, sure this inexperienced bench strength will perform in India, but who knows how theyll fare in the Carribeans, when a player has scored centuries in the West Indies such as Laxman why not use him?

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup and theres a never a question of being late hes only 32 thats not old, look at dravid he transformed his game i would late 20 into his 30's. Look at Robin Singh he was a warrior even at the age of 36, so i dont know what you guys are talking about.

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup Well VVS has not shown an ability to run better between wickets or to play the LOFTED shots... this limits his utility to No. 1, 2, and 3 in the batting order... Sourav Ganguly, never known as a great runner between the wicket has recently shown a very surprising ability to nudge the ball into gaps with soft hands and scamper singles... VVS has not shown that...

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup well theres nothing like trying him out right? every one else on the probable list has been pretty much tried out, let Laxman also have a chance, let him prove he can be a handy ODI player, through i think his greatest strength in ODI cricket being efficiency.

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup Kartik will go. Not just because he is young etc but because he is the reserve wicketkeeper. Last time round even when dravid was keeping parthiv went because you always need a resrve keeper. Like what happened in SA if Dhoni gets injured karthik will replace him. VVS i am sorry to say will not get a look into this world cup squad unless India does disatrously in the first two one days against sri Lanka

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup If Sehwag and pathan fail in both the ODIs then you never know, instead of one of them VVS might be taking that flight. Also i am expecting munaf to break down somewhere between end of 1st ODI and dinner the same night. So both VVS and RP could still be on that plane to WI

Re: Laxman optimistic about playing in world cup i cant imagine sending youngsters to the WC such as Karthik and Uttapha sure they did show signs of great talent, but thats not enough for the world cup, look at the soccer world cup,Ronaldo sucked for Brazil and was even going to get dropped from the squad but in the end the Brazilian team stuck with him and what does he do? becomes one of the highest goal scorer in the world cup. Same goes for Laxman, sure hes not the fleetest, hes a safe catcher in the field, what else do you need? you need players like Laxman who have played great innings for India, that should definitely fuel Laxmans ambition to perform at his highest level, and Vengsarkar calling him out on his fielding is rubbish, he made no real mistake in the SA series and wasnt even used in the outfield. That should definitely bring determination to Laxman, hes 32 not 62 thats still a young age.
