  1. But even if he makes tons of runs in Ranji cricket in India(which he has already done btw), there is no guarantee he will score runs in SENA countries because test cricket over there is a completely different ball game altogether. Best bet for him is to go play county cricket like Pujara did and focus less on limited overs cricket but I doubt he will cut down on IPL or LOIs.
  2. Then why not select him as a backup opener and play him when a spot is available ? First you select him at 6, now as an opener and then after 1 or 2 failures, you dump him. This is just poor management.
  3. Batting at 3 in Ranji is completely different than opening in SENA countries. Opening is a specialist job and only those who have played first class games both at home and overseas as a specialist opener should be opening in tests. Jerking someone around the order at a time when he is beginning to find his ground will only unsettle him.
  4. Talented but unfortunately couldnt make most of his opportunities. Then again, opening in SENA countries is one of the toughest jobs you can have. Perhaps, Gavaskar and to a certain extent Murali Vijay could do it successfully over a period of time. Sehwag is a different beast really, so not counting him.
  5. Its obvious Shastri just made that up as an excuse for not selecting him.
  6. Why is Vihari asked to open ? He is a middle order batsman ffs. He was looking solid and composed in some of his innings. If he fails, this is going to completely wreck his confidence. You can trust team management to screw a talented guy's career.
  7. India has won a grand total of 6 tests in their entire history in Australia. Aussies are a good side in their home conditions even without Warner and Smith especially with the bowling attack they have. It was never going to be easy. But having said that, this is the best chance that India has got to win a series in Australia and if they dont win, it will be a disappointment.
  8. This guy is looking far more composed than many other batsman and this is his first tour to Australia against the likes of Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood and Lyon. What I like most about him is there is no drama or hype around him. Just seems to keep his head down and looks focused on his job. Hope he gets a fifty.
  9. He is economical and bowls decently at the death which is a rare skill nowadays. Other seamers who have played for India in ODIs in the recent past have been much worse.

  11. lol what ? Without Bumrah and Bhuvi, Indian seam bowling in ODIs is non existent. Shami doesnt seem to be part of ODI setup.
  12. If we get a lead of even 50 runs, we have a great chance of winning this and thereby sealing the series. Only issue is the batsmen to follow - rookies Vihari, Pant and tail which will not wag.
  13. Opening in tests is a specialist's job. If team management is serious about finding a long term Indian opener, they will do better than select Rohit or Parthiv or some other makeshift option. This is not ODI or T20.
  14. Batting looks so tough. 323 is a huge score on this wicket against Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins, Lyon.
  15. You probably think Umesh shouldnt have been picked and I do too but Umesh has done well before in Australia. He is capable of bowling some good spells but he can be poor as well. Its just one of those decisions that didnt work out but cant be termed an outright blunder. Still there's a chance for him to redeem himself. Picking Vihari was a no brainer as we need an extra bat and can also chip in with a few overs. Got a couple of wickets, so justified his selection so far. No harm in giving a promising rookie a chance to prove himself. Jadeja couldnt have done a lot better than Vihari as a bowler. Spinners dont run through sides in Australia. Specialist bat is worth more than Jadeja who is a hit or miss type batsman.
  16. In hindsight, everyone is a great team selector.
  17. But India somehow manage to win this, it will be an amazing effort. When you think about it, Aus pretty much tailor made a pitch to suit them, if you beat them here, they are not coming back.
  18. Its tough to admit but there is an inner Manjrekar in all of us.
  19. Vihari is definitely a better bowler than him. In fact, most people are.
  20. His bowling will suit Aus conditions, not sure how well he can bat in these conditions though. He would have been right for the Perth test in place of Ashwin, another seamer has to be dropped if he needs to find a place from next test.
  21. His bowling action reminds me of Moeen.
  22. Actually Shami, Bumrah were very good today. Shami doesnt have any wickets to show but he was quite good. Ishant was quite decent and economical but pace was a bit down. Only Yadav was not good enough. There were some edges and misses which could have been wickets. Just have to give credit to some of the Aussie batsmen who made most of their opportunity. That's how the game goes. Australia will fightback, its their home conditions. India are still not out of it.
  23. Umesh is a nightmare for a captain. Even on helpful wickets, he can be a spray gun and bowl on either side of the wicket and give away runs and thereby releasing pressure. I have seen Umesh bowl some good spells but can also be terrible on even the most helpful surfaces. Very inconsistent and honestly not good enough to a test level bowler but India doesnt have a lot of options, so he is lucky to be in the reckoning.
  24. Bumrah is in a different league altogether compared to other Indian bowlers. There is no comparison really.
